American Fork 8 3 .727 Pi'to 6 5 .545 Tintic ...... 6 5 .545 Heber 2 9 .182 Closing up a three run lead gained in the first two innings, American Fork won the final game of the first half of the Utah Central league from the Tintic club Sunday, June 30, at Eureka. The score was 5 to 4, and the game was a thriller from start to finish. Replete with tense situations, the game proved to be one of the most interesting of the season. Tintic took the lead in the first innings when two hits by Kline and Stead-man Stead-man and an error by Bennett netted them two runs. In the second innings inn-ings Matthews' three-bagger and a clean single by Colledge were responsible re-sponsible for an additional run. American Fork's run arose irithe third innings when Matthews the mound-man, became peeved at Manager Man-ager Kline and walked out of the game, being replaced by Steele. At Durrant's first time at bat, Matthews tossed him one' of his favorite slow ones much to the liking of Durrant who slammed the pill for an easy hit. Notwithstanding the fact that Kline informed Matthews not to offer any more slow ones to Durrant, when he came to bat in the third innings Matthews Mat-thews presented him with another one. An argument ensued and Matthews Mat-thews walked from the diamond. It was in this innings that the Cavemen sent across two runs and ai similar number in the fourth. The score was tied by Tintic in the fourth arid from then on both sides played, airtight ball. Holmstead came in' with the winning run in the seventh' after reaching first on one of Stead-man's Stead-man's four errors and advanced by Nelson's and Bennett's singles. j In the ninth the Miners' chances to tie the score looked rosy. Beesley had gone toi first on his single, to second on Davis' sacrifice arid to-third to-third on Steele's long fly to Doc' Homer in the right field. Christiansen Christian-sen saved the day for the Cavemen and ended the game when he leaped high in the air to spear the fast drive off Colledge's bat. |
