Show WAR ON TYPHOID FEVER Scourge Seems to Have a Firm Foothold SEVENTY CASES THIS MONTH Much of the Disease Traced to Flowing Wells Health Authorities Up in Arms and a Vigorous Campaign Is Being Waged During the week twentyseven cases of typhoid fever wore reported to tho Board of Health < and a total of seventy cases has been recorded since the first of the month The epidemic Is growing apace nine more cases having been reported re-ported during the week just closed than j were the week previous For the same week last year but six cases were reported re-ported Of the above twentyseven cases the following were reported yesterday yes-terday EdrIc Elswood 123 East Eighth South street Ed Martin 52S Bridport street L P Detrjito 11 McDonald court and raldo Edith and Eric Klngsbury tho children of President Kingsbury of the University of Utah living at 517 South Fourth East street IMPURE WELL WATER Three more flowing wells In the city 1 have been tested by City ChemIst Harms and his report3 filed with the clerk o1 the Board of Health yesterday show the water In each case to be contami nated and unfit for use The analyses show that the water contains nitrites and free ammonia In excess besides innumerable In-numerable colonies or bacteria The wells examined are situated as follows One 165 feet deep In Morten court rear 226 East Seventh street another 200 feet deep 24 Aberdeen street and the third ICO feet deep 418 West Sixth South street on the premises of President l i Presi-dent Claque of the City Board of Education Edu-cation The chemist reports the water from these wells to be highly contaminated contami-nated and unfit for domestic and culinary culi-nary uses From the fact that six wells have now been examined and everyone I found to be contaminated It Is not Unreasonable un-reasonable to suppose that the water In Is fit to any of the other lowing wells be used at this time of the year 1 WEEKLY HEALTH REPORT I The births reported to the Board of I Health for the week ending August 29th numbered thirty twothirds of which were of the male sex For the preceding week thirtyone were reported and for the same week of last I year the reports of twentyone births were filed The bills of mortality for the week show a decrease of four deaths In comparison with the previous week and seven less thnn for the corresponding period of 1902 Of the seven bodies brought here for burial I two were residents who died while away from the city I There were two cases of scarlet fever remaining In quarantine from last week during the period covered by this report three new cases developed and none I having been discharged left five cases In detention In four premises at the close of this report as against four for the I same week of last year One new case of diphtheria developed during the week and five having recovered left one caseIn I case-in quarantine as against live for the r preceding week and three for the corresponding cor-responding period of 1902 No new cases 1 of smallpox were reported and to hayIng 1 hay-ing been Uncharged I left four cases In j t quarantine at the close of this report |
