Show SCHOOL OPENIN NEAR Revival of Interest at the I University of Utah STUDENTS COME FROM EAST School of Mines the Great Attraction New Buildings New Machinery Now Apparatus All in Place Ready for Work j i A fcv days ago an article appeared In the press headed University Scholarships Schol-arships Go Begging Since that date State Superintendent A C Nelson has been overrun with applicants It appears ap-pears the people generally did not understand un-derstand that tho University had scholarships at Its disposal Instructor R L McGhle who Is noon no-on leave of absence will depart for Chicago Chi-cago September loth where he will do work the coming year at tho University I of Chicago His family accompany him Instructor R A McBroom arrived on the 22nd from Chicago where he has spent the cummer He la visiting friends In the city prior to the beginning begin-ning of school duties Prof Benjamin F Howells has already al-ready returned from the East where he has been during vacation Prof Holmes director of physical education made a purchase of athletic I and gymnasium apparatus last week amounting to nearly 500 This will equip the football teams this fall and also add to the equipment of the gymnasium f gym-nasium r The new lockers provided for the accommodation ac-commodation of students are located In the basement of the following buildings build-ings One hundred and sixty In the J Library building 10S In the Museum and 102 In the Physical building The Metallurgical building now being constructed will hardly be completed at the opening of school thus delaying Its occupation for a few days This building Is designed for work In ore dressing metallurgy and assaying and will be provided with concentrating machinery smelting furnaces laboratories labora-tories for wet assaying and metallurgical metallur-gical analysis furnace rooms for assaying as-saying balance dispensary photographic photo-graphic rooms The 100 horsepower electric plant at the University Is nearinG completion the contractors being J J Burke Co The plant consists of a Babcock and Wilcox high pressure boiler an Ideal engine and a Westinghouse threephnee t generator together with the necessary switchboard and Instru nrMits This plant will furnish power to run the machinery In the shops the dynamo laboratory the oredressing mill etc Tt will also be used for power pIn n l testing by the engineering students stud-ents Judging from the many Inquiries and letters received from young men living liv-ing In tho East there will be a considerable consid-erable number them enter the Mining Min-ing school this fall The new metallurgical metal-lurgical plant and other facilities now being added 1 together with the unequaled un-equaled natural advantage of location 1 appeal strongly to the students wishing to get a firstclass course In mining engineering en-gineering Most of the machinery ordered to complete the equipment of the mechanical me-chanical laboratory has arrived Including In-cluding the Rider hot air engines and the steam air compressor The cement extension compression and torsion testing machines arc on the road from the East The capacity of each of the forgo and I foundry shops has been doubled this oummer making each of these shops now very commodious Several new machines for the shops have been purchased pur-chased this summer Each one of the four shop carpenter foundry forge and machine has now been furnished to accommodate a full section of students stud-ents that Is as many students as one Instructor can handle at once William Fosburg Instructor In the forge shop la returning home after an absence of two months In the East where he went to study shop work In connection with engineering colleges i He has visited the Massachusetts Institute In-stitute of Technology Cornell University I Univer-sity and several 1 other colleges Apparatus for the dynamo and electrical elec-trical laboratories IB J being received almost al-most dally This apparatus Is of the g very latest design and when It Is all Installed will make the equipment of these laboratories second to none The new apparatus will Include eleven eloc I trlc machines varying In capacity from one to thirty horsepower and designed for all kinds of direct and alternating current work twelve transformers speciallY designed for all kinds of transformer testing three marble switchboards fiftyeight electrical measuring Instruments Including four for standardizing l purposes eleven automatic Victor circuit breakers standard cells standards of resistance of Induction etc The cost of all this new apparntUH will exceed 7000 Yesterday Prof Harvey Holmes received re-ceived a letter from E W Dccto man football team ager of the Berkeley 1 asking for a game thin fall |
