Show LUCAS TALKS l OF BALL President of the League Reviews Re-views Situation PLEASED WITH SALT LAKE Promises a Strong League for Next Year Favors Sb Clubs and Thinks That Ogden Will Bo in the Circuit W H Lucas president of the Pacific National league arrived In Salt Lake yesterday morning and will remain here for two or three days 1 looking over the situation as regards baseball affairs In making his usual trip over he league circuit The president Is I rather delinquent In reaching Zion but gave as his reason that he couldnt possibly reach here at an earlier date owing to more Important business demanding de-manding his attention at the other end of tho circuit Whon asked about the mooting of the directors at Butte the real reasons for the other four clubs of the league pulling ng out and the future prospects of the game Mr Lucas said MEETING AT BUTTE The mooting at Butte was extremely extreme-ly harmonious and as a result of it I I believe we all have a better understanding under-standing with each other There are differences In every league but If there were any In this one they were all smoothed oer at the session In Butte I contend that a convention of all the clubowners Is n good thing and one that should be carried out moro frequently fre-quently When We all get together and compare notes and realize where we all stand with one another there can be no doubt about the worth such a meeting meet-ing Is to club owners IIELTSNA FOOLED HIM With regard to the disbandment oC Helena I must say that I was taken unawares when I received the announcement an-nouncement from President Carmon that the Helena team would disband I loft Tacoma on August 1 for Frisco where I arrived oh the 15th Everything Every-thing looked serene for the league the prospects were bright and I received my first Intimation from President Harmon upon arrival In Frisco that Helena without giving me any notice whatever would withdraw I immediately Imme-diately wired President Fischer of tho Helena club asking him to substantiate substan-tiate the report and awaited n reply from him before responding to Car mons wire I appears that Fischer I had wired me at Tacoma on August 14th to the effect that Helena v ould disband but owing to a misunderstanding misunderstand-ing with the telegraph company he did not get his wire to me as he Intended In tho meantime I received an application ap-plication from Mr Binford of Ogden for the Helena franchise I conferred with President Hart about taking Ogden Og-den In and he favoring such an action ac-tion wired the remaining club presidents presi-dents oC the circuit slating that Ogden Og-den had made application that San Francisco and Los Angeles favored their admission and requested an Immediate Im-mediate answer from nIl I had no sooner done this than I received a wire from President Carmon slating that I should make no arrangements for the removal of his franchise for the reason rea-son that Tacoma had quit I ho Is correctly cor-rectly quoted It Is said that Manager Dugdale unaware of my advices for him to take his team to Ogden had ordered him to take his club to Vancouver Vancou-ver Having been advised from two different sources Carmort did not know who was running the leugue and not wishing to go out on1 wild gooso chase he hrow up the sponge Duff dale had acted In what he considered to be the beat Interests of the league while nsl a matter of fact I had not directed him to Ogden but had advised him to go down there and had sighted him to that town as being a good ball town and a good paying one as well NEXT CAME TACOMA When the Tacoma team disbanded wo had two vacancies to fill but Mr Blnford was not satisfied with one of tho conditions of the Helena transfer to Ogden namely the engagement of George Carry the Helena manager And as we had In the meantime received re-ceived applications from Whatcorn and applcal0ns certain playern of the team that It would be to the best Interests of the league to place the franchise In Vancouver Van-couver and Whatcom asrnloy wero coUer to each other wo dropped the OgdOn proposition only to be advised a day later that Whatcom had decided not to take a franchise owing to the lateness of thp season but that they I would like to become associated with Mm lofinio noxt voar Wo thon dc cldcd Li LoUbU to continue with thd six remaining remain-ing clubs THEN HARRY HART QUIT When I arrived in Seattle last Sunday Sun-day I learned for the first time that Harry Hart had disbanded his two loams Before I left Frisco Mr Hart assured me lore that ho would stick to this league until the finish Last Monday he wired me that ho had written me fully about his reasons for shutting up shop but I loft Tacoma before the letter let-ter arrived and do not know Its contents con-tents nor Mr Harts reasons They must be good ones though for Mr Hart ban boon loyal all the way through and something must have merited mer-ited his sudden action BEST ONES WERE LEFT When Mr Hart withdrew I was I somewhat discouraged but appreciating the fact that I had the beat force of the circuit left and having received assurance assur-ance from the four remaining clUb that they would stay with me to the end I the meeting at Butte At decided upon meetng Bute that meeting the action of the Helena and Tacoma clubs was severely condemned con-demned Now about the meeting of the league presidents In Buffalo 1 havent learue anything to say I havent as yet received re-ceived any Information from Secretary Farrell UH to what was done at that meeting and only knowing what I have rend In the account of the eesslon I dont care to way anything until I nm more fully Informed by tho secretary Manager Jimmy Reynolds wns also Been last night from Ogden Whatcom and Vancouver and Is 1 Inclined to tIltS belief that Ogden will be ono of the towns that will be admitted Mr Lucas prefers a Fixclub league to one with Ight cubs Ho thinks that where thcro are only BX tennis In the circuit that Interest In 1H nix cnn never be on the wane for the reason that each club I will be nt home more and away 7 LIKES SALT LAKE Mr Lucas yesterday saw
