Show Research Study Needs Arthritis Participants Garfield County residents are being asked, by the Utah Chapter of The Arthritis Foundation, to participate in a scientific study aimed at identifying the genetic factors that increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. This study could significantly advance the foundation's research and is the only one of its kind worldwide. Utah provides an excellent ex-cellent opportunity to study the genetics of this disease because of large families and their willingness willing-ness to participate. The first and fundamental phase of the study requires that all Utahns with rheumatoid arthritis be identified. "We need to hear from everyone throughout Garfield County who believes he or she has rheumatoid arthritis," said Daniel O. Clegg, M.D., Associate Asso-ciate Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah. "As many as 6500 Utahns may have rheumatoid arthritis." Individuals who believe or know they have this form of arthritis should call 483-3400 or 1-800-748-4664 before April 9 to answer a brief questionnaire. Responses Re-sponses are vital to the success of this project and the future understanding under-standing of the specific causes of rheumatoid arthritis. |
