According to some local employees, Central Square Four in Provo closed its doors forever Thursday and Carillon Square in Orem will follow in a week's time. The announcement from Carmike's corporate office in Salt Lake City and its home base in Columbus, Ga., comes a week after Carmike filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a reorgani-zationstatus for the giant company. Reuters News Service that Monday reported Carmike is one of several big theater operators suffering from what analysts are calling the "overscreening" of the United States! This was due to the construction of too many multiplexes with stadium seating and digital sound and a failure to close enough older, underperforming screens. Carmike, like some of its rivals, took on too much debt for the construction, Reuters said. "I think their criteria was to close any theater with less than eight screens and any theater that didn't produce a return last year," said one Utah County al Carmike employee. Water Pleasant in Gardens Grove and Wynnsong in Provo will both remain open. Carmike filed for bankruptcy protection one week after it missed a payment to holders of its $200 million subordinated notes, according to Reuters. As of December 31, 1999, Carmike operated 459 theaters with a total of 2,848 screens located in 36 states. Cities request help for interchange, construction sales tax revenues.
