Show Friday. August 18, 2000, THE DAILY HERALD, (www.HadOhenerald.com), i MOVIES Continued from C6 unaware of the connection they already have. Bonnie Hunt Jim Belushi and Carroll O'Connor all provide ample supporting humor, and the film, despite its fits and starts, is ultimately satisfying and sweet, not to mention at times extremely funny. B SCARY MOVIE (1 nr., 28 mln.; R for abundant harsh profanity, abundant male and female nudity, sexual vulgarity, sexual situations, comic violence) Almost a parody of 'Scream," though jabs at other films are taken, too. Focus is on the scatological and sexual, stretching the limits of the R rating, with some clever satire now and then, too. Laughs are plentia movie ful, and embarrassing that makes you ashamed for laughing at it. B SHANGHAI NOON (1 fir., 45 for occasional profanitmn.; mild sen- y, vulgarity, brief drug-usscene-for-scen- James Gamer and suallty, abundant comic martial-art-s violence) Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are a Chinese guard and a Wild West outlaw, respectively, in this entertaining film set In 1881 America. They team up to rescue a kidnapped princess, and Wilson's understated, marvel ousty funny performance rescues the movie. over-lon- PG-1-3 slow-pace- (1 fir, 33 min.; for; a few scattered profanities, mostly .. bloodless fantasyaction violence) Director Bryan Singer pulls off the impossible: a comic book movie that is as fun for fans as It is for newcomers, and vice versa. The title characters are regular people Irving' ruture wno in me have mutant powers telekinesis," etc. ' magnetism, who must battle an evil group of similarly powered mutants. Smarter and deeper than your average superhero ' flick, with only a bit of unmotivated characterization and too much pos-- ' tunng for a sequel to keep it from being perfect B PG-1- 3 A- BENEATH (2 firs., 5 for scattered profanities, including one very harsh one; moderate violence, some of It bloody; overheard sex; sexual situations) First half of this grownup thriller about a housewife (Michelle Pfeiffer) who hears voices and mln.; PG-1-3 super-strengt- sees images: suspenseful and taut. Second half: generic stuff, with Pfeiffer forced to run around and scream like a "Scream" victim. Harrison Ford is a big mumbly lump as her adulterous husband (the ad campaign gives THAT away). It'll make you jump, and it is stylish, but there's nothing to it, and nothing that hasn't been done before. B- - " "woman-in-peril- code-crackin-g Engine' children's TV, the film is too complicated (with three, count 'em, three plots) and too And Thomas himself hardly appears, for brief nonsexual nudity, frequent mild profanities, mild Innuendo) Clint Eastwood (who directed), Tommy Lee Jones, mln.; circumstances. WHAT UES hand-to-han- a funny film. B SPACE COWBOYS (2 firs., 10 with this sort of insane bravery. Heroes are ordinary people who act courageously in extraordinary 3 g Page Q7 i semi-freque- THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD hr., 25 min.; 6 and absolutely harmless) Based on the sweet simple "Thomas the Tank d - the focus instead being on the Mr. Conductor and an old hermit who regrets letting an old train fall into disrepair. Its guileless, innocent heart is in the right place, and it may charm very young children. C for (1 nr., 56 mn.; PG-1profanity, lots of explosions, some combat resulting In some blood and death) Taut, exciting action film with a surprisingly deep theme about loyalty and courage. Americans in World War II disable and subsequently board a German submarine, looking for a device. They wind up stuck on the sub, though, with a German destroyer sure to arrive any minute and kill them all. Aside from being entertained, one also gains a strong sense of appreciation for the real men who acted Donald Sutherland, all enormously likable, play four old guys who get to go into space to fix a satellite. The premise is absurd, but just basking in the combined charisma of the cast makes It fun. Garner is underused, though, and the film stumbles in its second hour, when we are suddenly expected to take the whole thing seriously. Eastwood avoids most of the cliches usually inherent in this sort of film, though he does succumb to a few. B Chan's martial arts sequences are as comic and creative as ever. The only major problem is that the two don't team up until 45 minutes into the movie. Aside from that, and a few plot holes that you just have to look the other way on, it's a thoroughly enjoyable, laugrvout-lou- r Provo, Utah :s Agree? Disagree?
