Show THEATRES BARNEY BERNARD barney bernard supported by his metropolitan company of twenty players and bringing etith him the original production 0 bis great play the financier be the offering at the grand opera house on the night of next thursday while this will ba the first appearance of this talented young star in this city mr bernard will need but little introduction to the play goers of ogdene for his immense reputation as an impersonator of hebrew comedy characters has come a long time before him in this line of stage work he is unquestionably the peer of the american stage today his tour has been a continuous ovation and crowded and enthusiastic houses have almost invariably demanded curtain speeches of the comedian who has afforded them so much enjoyment the financier fits mr bernard with great exactness because it was written especially for him by H D cottrell the play tells of a financier who has been married for twenty years and who has a daughter of eighteen by hard labor he has amassed a fortune of invested mainly in flats with a marine view in one of which the family lives A old friend and a diamond expert induces the financier to invest his hard earned in a south african diamond mine the financier separates from his hard earned capital at the beginning of the second act the financier Is found celebrating at home the twentieth anniversary of hs marriage dispensing champagne and receiving presents A cablegram arrives at the height of the festivities informing him that his mine Is worthless but tha plucky financier refuses to let the cablegram interfere with the evenings enjoyment so he opens the way to the dining room pausing only to ask a fat man for the loan of his appetite the third act finds the financier conducting an humble clothes cleaning establishment below the sidewalk in this scene there is a great deal of humor sometimes half pathetic more often of uproarious jollity it all ends by the diamond expert returning from south africa with the cheering intelligence that the mine is worth millions so all ends as the audience likes it to each act in the play Is invested with the little touches of genius that only the talent of mr bernard could give it all who attend mr bernards presentations of the financier in this city may be assured of an evening of the most hearty enjoyment |
