Show The Thunderbird Monday, September 26, 1983 Counseling at SUSC is multi-facete- d aid by Lorraine Kessel Frustrated tears, emotional humiliation, the face of depression. Such feelings are familiar and frequent to some young people, and many students ask themselves where they can go for help. At SUSC, the counseling center is the most sensible place, and its just around the corner, according to Dr. Gary Dunford, director of counseling and testing. Many students ask themselves whether or not they really need help to resolve such feelings." Students should not be afraid. No one should be ashamed of inner feelings, Dunford said. The counseling center handles psychoneurotic, academic and various other types of problems. We help people who just want to talk, Dunford explained. Students come to the counseling center with all types of problems. Its important for students to realize that whatever problem they have they will not be turned away, Dunford said, whether those feelings be depression, suicide or homesickness. Dunford indicated that 30 percent of SUSC students use the counseling center. He feels students need to understand that the counseling center is not the seat of judgment. We dont confront people or tell them to change, Dunford said, we only try to help. Workshops dealing with stress reduction are taught twice each quarter. The workshops are primarily for the students. Do students ever feel apprehensive? Yes, Dunford said. They are embarrassed to come to a shrink. Yet, when emotions become painful enough, students come to receive help and this makes Dunfords job very worthwhile. He said he tries not to get depressed over the problems of his patients. I have great faith in the ability of people to change, he said. People will and can change. There are always students that do not achieve academically, those who do not make it in the school play, those who do not have many friends. Though these same people may not call for help, they are depressed and lonely. Dunford believes it is up to other people to see to their needs. Other people can report to us by bringing them (the students needing help) in themselves, the counselor said. Resident advisers who see a student withdraw can bring them in, but it is not until they come in that we can begin to help them. Just as the emotional victim must not be afraid to seek help, observers should not be afraid to report people who need help, Dunford said. One must know the difference between a minor depression and a serious condition, he stated. If a student speaks angry thoughts, let him, but if he withdraws himself into a room, eating nothing and seeing no one, then his condition should be considered. SUSC Financial aid, Cannon are still popular on campus (continued from page 14) financial reasons. Cannon said he encourages them to stay in classes, even though they have to take financial aid or even go into debt. The student may not avoid incurring educational debts, but he will get his education, Cannon said. Many times he will get a much better job with the education, and thats better than extending the education out Childrens Jeans Clothing No need to break in new denims.
