Show Page 2 The Tfumderbird Monday , September 26, 1983 Reception draws 300 by Tracy Hopkins More than 300 students and parents attended a special reception hosted at President Gerald R. Sherratts house Wednesday. Sherratt, Dean of Students Sterling Church and members of ASSUSC were on hand to personally meet new students and their parents. Refreshments were served in Sherratts Tudor room, a room used only for honored guests on special occasions. A warm and friendly atmosphere prevailed, as Sherratt discussed hometowns, high schools and future plans with students and their parents. It was an excellent opportunity for the incoming freshmen to become familiar with the members of student government and vice versa, said Dave Coles, ASSUSC executive council member. The open house lasted from 5 to 7 p.m., after which parents were invited to attend a program at the Thorley Recital Hall titled, Especially for Parents. The program gave parents a basic orientation of SUSCs programs and goals. The freshman orientation program received positive reviews from visitors, Church and Coles reported. I heard nothing but good things about the college that night, Coles said. Many of them had only spent the one day here and were already very enthusiastic about the campus. During the parent orientation meeting, student activities continued with a free movie in the Shakespearean Theatre. "Much of the cost for refreshments and the reception in general was taken care of by the president at his own expense. This directly reflects the presidents active interest in this annual reception, said Coles. Coles commented that although many of the foreign students seemed shy, they were very receptive to an outstretched hand and a friendly smile. Both Church and Coles said they believed the reception generated a positive spirit, eased the minds of many parents, and helped the newcomers feel more at home. President Gerald R. Sherratt visits with new students at the special reception for them and their parents which took place at his home Wednesday.
