Included in the calendar will be information regarding rules, eligibility requirements, entry procedure and also a tentative schedule for events. Changes this year include a referee clinic to help improve the quality of the officiating in the program. In the past the referees havent had to have training, Brown said, but we hope to change this trend in the future by offering officials who attend this seminar a higher fee than those who don't. By doing this, we hope to upgrade not only the officiating, but also the caliber of play. Depending on the number of participants, the intramural program hopes to be able to have different levels of competition so athletes will be able to by Brooks Washburn In towns and cities all across the nation, the coming of fall often brings with it the sounds of football and other various sporting events. Here at SUSC things are much the same, and the starting of school usually means that intramural sports can be found in abundance. This year, SUSCs intramurals program promises to be bigger and better than ever. According to Dave Brown, assistant coordinator for the intramurals program here, this years intramurals slate will be able to offer a more complete program for the Thunderbird student. This years intramurals program will be going through changes that will make competition better for Brown said. the average student-athlet- A bright outlook mingled with hopes of immense improvement are in store for the SUSC gymnastics program this fall, Thunderbird Coach Kathryn Berg said. Most of last years squad, the best in SUSC history, will return, Berg said, and a trio of promising freshmen should bolster optimism even more. Seniors Janet Jorgensen and Mechele Hebberd have improved consistently in the past three years, and both should be stronger this year, Berg said. Karen Smith and Brenda Shaw, both juniors, have performed well as competitors, and will also help the team, she said. LUNCH & DINNER According to Brown, the budget for this years intramurals program will come from the student senate. We will probably use a minimum of $3000 this year to run our program, but it could be more depending on the amount of participation, he said. Some of the sports that will be included in this years intramural program include volleyball, flag football, softball, basketball, golf and just about any type of sport that the students feel they would like to participate in, according to Brown. We hope to provide the kind of events that the student body want to participate in. Brown said. In short, we are open for student suggestions. Gymnasts gird for big year after best season in history Fernwoods 20 compete more evenly. Brown says he hopes to attract people who would have otherwise not competed. Two lettermen, two freshmen and a transfer will make up the fall golf squad at SUSC, and Coach Tom Kingsford said he figures he has a pretty good mix. Returning from last years team are RMAC medalist Stuart Adams and letterman Paul Olsen, both juniors. Chris Abegglen, a former Manti High School and Snow College player, is the transfer student. Chris will complement Stuart Adams very well this year, Kingsford said. Following a special tryout round, Todd Jackson and Alan Tolman won spots on the squad. Both played for SUSC alumnus Rex Wright at Alta High School in Sandy. Both Todd and Alan are competent golfers who will help us, Kingsford said. Overall, I think we will be competitive again this year. SUSC missed the NAIA District VII title by one stroke a year ago, and finished second to Western State in the RMAC tournament.
