Show The Thundcrbird Monday, September 26, 1983 Page 11 Library offers variety of facets The library subscribes to 762 magazines, which can also be checked out on a limited basis, said Tom Challis, periodical director In the reference area, encyclopedias, governmental documents and histories, and many other materials are available for perusal in the library. t materials, mostly audio-visulearning aids, are found in the media center. Records, computer software, films and tapes are loaned for one week, while equipment can be borrowed on an overnight basis. Lab assistants will help students set up and use equipment in the media center. Various types of computers are also available. The college archives, historic manuscripts and pictures, and document files are kept in the special collections department. Students are welcome to research historical facts in the special collections area, said Inez Cooper, director. The Learning Center is located in the basement of the library. Tutors are employed at the center to aid students free of charge. Randy Christensen, acting library director, said the college purchases books regularly for use in the facility, in an effort to bring the library up to American Library Association standards. by Sally Ann Hull The quality of the library maintained by an institution of higher learning is perhaps one of the most important parts of a students education, or lack of same SUSC sustains the largest library in southern Utah. With Six departments, five floors and thousands of reference materials to choose from, the library is available to serve every educational need a student may have Among other things, the library, open Monday through Saturday, is equipped with a special Learning Center and an area known as Instructional Media, where students can make use of audio and video educational supplements. Six departments comprise the librarys resource center: circulation, periodicals, media center, reference, special collections and the Learning Center Books may be located through two computers and an extensive card catalog in the circulation department on the main floor. Books can be checked out in circulation with a student body card. Local patrons of the library may purchase family library cards also. The periodical department is a maze of information.
