Also, the Computer Center has selected the listening lab to house one of its Beehive computer terminals. The main-lin- e computer will facilitate streamlined record keeping within the Learning Center and will be available for use by students who have access codes. Dunn and Dunns Learning Style Inventory, a questionnaire which identifies 21 environmental factors that affect learning, has been purchased so that students can have access to strategies for independent learning. The inventories are sent to Manhattan, Kansas for scoring, and are returned with an individual printout and graph of each students learning style profile at no cost to the students. Brown said, This helps students decipher what type of atmosphere best stimulates their learning abilities. Free tutoring is also available to any SUSC student upon request. Tutoring may be given on an individual or group basis in many courses, including: physics, English, botany, and psychology. Workshops are given periodically on such topics as study skills, efficient reading, and graduate school entrance test preparation. Spelling clinics give individual aid in dealing with spelling problems and sentence structure, which upgrade sentence variety and effectiveness. The writing specialist in the Learning Center has taken advantage of the Apple II computer in the media center to write spelling and grammar programs for student use. The Learning Center is for everyone, said Brown. Its just a relaxed study environment. via cassette tape, For students having a few problems catching on to a subject or for those who just need a quiet corner to study in, the Learning Center might be a good place to investigate. Bobbi Brown, Learning Center secretary, said, Our facility offers the student a pleasant learning environment for a variety of skills instruction. Staff members assist the students in finding ways to enhance their approaches to learning. The Learning Center is located on the lowest level of the SUSC Library in Rooms 113 and 114. It extends free, helpful pamphlets, learning aids, individual and group tutoring, free workshops, and help from basic skills specialists. Brown added that last year alone, the Learning Center supplied students with 23 different free handouts and pamphlets; students obtained a total of 4,474 copies throughout the year. Topics included reading skills, studying for exams, textbook uses and writing skills. One of the services being extended to students in the Learning Center this year is a reading machine for the legally blind or those with sight problems. The Apollo Electronic Visual Aid donated to the college last year by Cedar City resident Laura Rand can magnify print up to 60 times its normal size. This visual aid is housed in the listening lab. The listening lab offers opportunity for class and individualized instruction with recorded material.
