Show Government Will Operate Oper-ate Star Mail Route To Thistle to Improve Service Ser-vice "As the lowest acceptable bid received receiv-ed In response to the recent advertisement advertise-ment for star route service between (Price and Thistle, Is deemed evcesslve when compared with the rate at which the service may be performed as govern gov-ern ment-operated, it is hereby directed that Star Rojte No. G0001 from Price by Helper, Castle Gate, Colton and Soldier Summit, to Thistle, 01.5 miles and back, seven times each week, be established and oierated effective October Oc-tober 1G, 1930, as provided by the Act of May 18, 191G (See. 1355, Paragraph 2, Postal Laws and Regulations, 1924.) Beginning October 10, the govern-men govern-men will inaugurate a mail truck service ser-vice between Thistle and Price according ac-cording to J. F. McKnight, postmaster. Tills decision was reached after bids had been received from private contractors con-tractors and the bids deemed too high by the government. Trucks will leave Price at 3:30 in the afternoon, stopping at Helper, Castle Gate, Colton and Soldier Summit, Sum-mit, en route. Coming this wuy trucks will leave Thistle at -1 :20 in the morning. morn-ing. The trip is scheduled for two and one half hours. The trucks are to carry all first-class mail anl all reservation reser-vation mail, which Includes all classes class-es of mail for that section. This will mean that Price and 'the Uintah Basin will receive part of the service which "the two communities have been fighting for all summer. The truck which leaves Price will connect con-nect with the train from Marysvale to Salt Lake City and will pick up the mail on that train the next morning for Price. Only first-class mall, films and other perishables will bo brought to Price but all mail for the Basin will be carried to Price. The mail will then be transferred to the trucks In Price about 6:30 o'clock for the reservation and will be there before noon. This will mean that the Uintah Basin will receive re-ceive the early morning Salt Lake City mail the same day lefore noon. The establishment of this route was the culmination of a determined fight led by newspapers, postmaster, civic clubs and the Price Chamber of Commerce Com-merce for relief from the service being rendered because of a change in schedule sched-ule of the Denver and Rio Grande Western railway. As conditions were, the only mall service Into this city was early in the morning, for" eastern mall and late in the evening for mail from Salt Lake City and other points west. The westbound train arrives around 5 o'clock in the morning and the eastbound one at 7 o'clock in the evening. There was no service during the working hours. Practically two days were necessary for business letters let-ters to reach Salt Lake City. Uintah Basin also led in a fight against the service- claiming that it was wholly inadequate. At the request of J. F. M'cKnight, Wilford Danvers made an investigation of the service there and recommended that the government gov-ernment advertise for bids. Many private concerns then appealed appeal-ed to the utilities commission for a franchise to carry passenger, freight and1 mail. Hearings were recently conducted in this city, but no franchise fran-chise has yet been granted. The Denu ver and Rio Grande Western railroad also appeared before the commission for the franchise.
