Show "Vengeance Is Mine" BY L. A. IIOLLENBECK "Vengeance is mine. I will repay," saith the Lord. "How does this affect prohibition? There arc certain politicians politi-cians who claim much for prohibition, and urge its enforcement. Vain hope. Booze is being made in private fami-' fami-' lies all over the country. But, one of O the most striking shortcomings and iniquities in-iquities of prohibition is exemplified In our courts an despecially before justices jus-tices of the peace from Maine to California. Cal-ifornia. Let a man come before a justice jus-tice of the peace charged with larceny, battery, or any outer misdemeanor, and on conviction or plea of guilty the judge usually says, "Fined ten dollars," dol-lars," and not usually more than fifty dollars. That is justice. We all applaud ap-plaud that, for all men applaud justice. jus-tice. But, let a man come before a justice of the peace for a violation of the prohibition law, which is only a misdemeanor, and if the prisoner is found guilty or pleads guilty, the judge looks over at him and says, "You are fined $299.00," and probably tacks on a jail sentence too. Is that Justice? No, that is vengeance. In a stealing case the judge has good sense, but in a liquor case, he seems to lose his good sense, and sees only the vindictiveness of the fanatical prohibitionist. pro-hibitionist. Hence his judgment is justice jus-tice plus vengeance. Who authorized the justice to dispense vengeance from his court? Nobody, except the outsider who is a venomous fanatic. The cry all over the country is growing for re-' re-' peal of the prohibition amendment. Ev en the most unreasonable dry congressmen con-gressmen are changing front. The people peo-ple cannot stand the unholy stench of vengeance .from the courts. God is speaking, for fhe voice of the people Is the voice of God. "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord." Rom. 12:19 and the 18th amendment is to be torn up root and branch. |
