Show This Week I by ARTHUR BRISBANE The American System The R-101 Leason What Ails Us All? The Busy Rum Demon In South Carolina last week President Presi-dent Hoover compared the "Americas system" with thoae in other countries He said: "In the American system,, through free and universal education, we train the runners; we strive to give them an equal start; our government Is the umpire of Its fairness. The winner win-ner is he who shows th most conscientious con-scientious training, the greatest ability, the strongest character. "Socialism or its violent brother. Bolshevism, would compel all the runners run-ners to end the race equally; it would hold the swiftest to the speed of the most backward. Anarchy would pro-ride pro-ride neither training nor umpire. Despotism or class government picks those who run and also those who win." The lesson of the R-101 disaster is plain enough. It is folly to build gigantic flying bags of cloth, that will absorb, as that unfortunate ship did, more than 16,000 pounds of rain water when already al-ready heavily loaded. It is preposterous to run such a ship In a storm, as was done in this case, when it might have run away from the storm. Dirigibles should be made, as one was recently made, by the United States Government, setting an admirable admir-able example, all metal clad. Such a metal gasbag can be kept absolutely free from leaks, so that even hydrogen gas might be safely used. It is not exposed to danger from lightning, since it offers no resistance to the passage of electric current from sky to earth. When you are ill, it is well to know what is the' matter. Business is ill. with an illness that affects millions of unemployed, as Illness of the body affects thousands of millions of cells. Mr. L. Greenfield of Santa Barbara, diagnosing, finds the following list of symptoms: 1. Over-speculation. .2. Fear. 3. Loss of confidence in our financial finan-cial system. 4. Very low and cautious circulation of money. 5. Increase of unemployment by big business methods of "economy." 6. False statements of the- country's condition. What would you add to these syrup toms? There Is something the mattef that nobody understands. This country coun-try fortunately will cure itself this time as it has cured itself often before. The Demon Rum continues to demonstrate dem-onstrate increased efficiency in our bootleg era. It was bad enough in old days, when varnish and wood extract were not used to make whisky. Whisky killed you rather slowly. At present, the process may take anywhere from five minutes to fire years. In Newark, N. J., last week, for Instance, In-stance, four people died promptly after drinking bootleg. The "authorities fear that more deaths may follow, as that particular whisky Beems to be widely distributed." It is amazing that adults not hopeless hope-less alcoholics should drink poisonous concoctions- of which they know nothing. One scientist, disliking the idea of making money, said when announcing an important discovery: "Thank heaven, it cannot possibly have any practical use." Probably he was mistaken. Paresis, a disease of the mind, that had always ended fatally, is now treated successfully by radio. The disease has recently been fought by creating intense fever in the patient, malaria -bearing mosquitoes were made to plant malarial germs in the paretic's blood he got malaria, but the paresis improved. Now, in place of the malarial mosquito, mo-squito, and unpleasant disease germs, the clean radio is used to cause intensely in-tensely high fever. New York Academy of Medicine doctors discuss the new "remedy" with hope and excitement. The "curing" machine" is a Bmall radio station, its energy localized between be-tween two plates. The patient sits between them, and the radio impulses pass through him, creating a high fever. George Russell, known as "AB," now lecturing in America, talks common com-mon sense on farming. II does not urge any "hack to the farm" movement, move-ment, knowing that once in the city, men from the farms rarely go back! His mission is to persuade people to stay on their farms and make them better by increasing production on smaller acreage and building up a country life more worthy of human beings. "AE" is Interested especially, as the government and everybody else should be, in our "one-horse farmers." numbering num-bering 7,000,000. These farmer millions have an average av-erage yearly cash Income of about ?.!?? Th6lr wlvea and chldn have little opportunity for enjoyment No wonder they leave the farms. "AE" would persuade them to stav by making farm life happier. (9. mo. bf Kin Fturi Syodkmu. ImJ |
