Show SELLING WHISKY IN SANPETE. A Point for the Revenue Officials to Work Up Good Opinions of the "Democrat." -Ephradj, Sanpete County,- ) - Utah, December 8.) The Democrat is read in' Ephraim by many besides those who subscribe for the paper, and it is surely winning it way' in I the confidence of the people as a fearless and outspoken exponent of right and justice jus-tice to all. It is a paper for the people, and in the interests of the people it is doing what every high-toned journal should aim to do. This is the universal opinion of the readers of the Democrat in Ephraim. A question has been agitating the minds of the people here for some time in regard to the whisky traffic of this place. It is a question that our citizens take to heart fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, the wife of the drunkard, and all good citizens cry out against it. We have not one licensed saloon in the city of Ephraim, yet there is no scarcity of liquor; plenty can be gotton every day in the week, and Sunday in particular; one individual here especially, who is noted as the Whisky Chief of Sanpete, for years has laughed at the efforts of the people of Ephraim to stop his whisky traffic. No wonder that the Tribune, a short time since, spoke of a whisky seller of Ephraim who had accumulated ac-cumulated some twelve thousand bushels of grain. This is the truth ; the Tribune is correct on that point sure. It is well known where our boys get the liquor ; it is well known that this individual indi-vidual is dealing. out his horrible stuff called liquor to our sons, our fathers our brothers, and that he has made many a home wretched, and that he will continue con-tinue to do so. The Whisky Chief is well known in Sanpete county, and the wonder won-der is, for it is wonderful, that this man can run his business under the very noses of out city fathers; and that he does do it and has done it for years cannot can-not be unknown to them ; and here, Mr. Editor, we would like to ask a few questions ques-tions in connection with this subject which we hope you will be kind enough to answer, so that all may know and pront tnereby. First What is the penalty for selling liquor without a revenue license ? Second If a' party, after selling liquor for one or two years without a revenue license, then takes out a license, does ' that exculpate him for the time he sold without license? Third If a person sells liquor for nine months in the year without a revenue license and for fear of trouble he takes out a license in the last quarter, for the whole year, including the nine months which have passed, does this save him from liability for the nine months he sold without license ? Fourth Can a person holding a Government Gov-ernment office a postmaster, for instance in-stance sell . liquor without a revenue license,, and draw a salary from Uncle Sam as postmaster? If you will kindly answer the above questions, you will much oblige Many Citizens of Ephraim. The penalty for the first offense is fine and imprisonment in the Penitentiary. To the second, third and fourth questions, No. Ed. Democrat. |
