Show Bland's Opinion What the "Sun" . Says. New Yobk, January 25. A reliable Washington Wash-ington special reports Bland, as saying that the drift of sentiment in the House Coinage Committee is to his regret in favor of the issue of silver certificates of the denomination denomina-tion of one, two and five dollars. On the subject of the redemption of subsidiary coin the committee has already virtually decided in favor of the bill repealing the law by which this is made compulsory. Bland will report and champion this bill. The Sun in its leader this morning deolares strongly that mqno-metalism seems to be the only safe and wise course for this country. coun-try. By our present legislation we are moving mov-ing slowly, though slowly, away from gold, which is now our standard, toward silver. There seems to be no possibility of arresting this movement. Congress cannot be brought to repeal the present law providing for the steady coinage of silver. The operation of this law is sure, after a few years, to make silver our standard of money, and gold will be good. Will it be A benefit? We think so. We see no. good reason for traveling any longer toward the benefit by the slow and circuitous route we have hitherto pur-sued. pur-sued. , - |
