Mercutio and the Tybalt Ask Shakespeare OGCEN SCHOOL DISTRICT Pursuant to repeated announcements previouly made in TIE DEMOCRAT a portion por-tion of the Saintly part of the taxpayers and legal voters of the Ogden first school precinct gathered in the Tabernacle Taberna-cle for the transaction of business At 72o oclock Joseph Stanford the chairman chair-man of the board of trustees and the cleverest trustee Ogden was ever given a chance to have opened the meeting announcing an-nouncing the purposes of the same to the audience which gradually filled up to the number of about flue hundred men Gentiles Gen-tiles and leading Mormon business men being conspicuous by a diminutively small representation fact not a Gentile Gen-tile was there The financial report was read by AugusT Augus-T Wright secretary and outgoing member mem-ber of the Board of Trustees I showed that over o000 had been taken in the last fiscal year by public assessment and 2100 by Territorial apportionment Among the expenditures were 000 for the trustees 660 for heating 430 for janitor etc leaving a balance of 94068 on hand I also showed that 3874 had been paid to male and o86125 to female fe-male teachers The statement that there remained 240555 of delinquent tuition fees created some discussion in which Elder W I Wright and Bishop E Stratford took part to enlighten thc brethren After the financial statement had been sanctioned on motion by Bishop R M Quarrie Elder Stanford read a brief review re-view of last years work and labors by the trustees drawing attention to several sever-al serious defects in buildings and other requirements for school purposes and finally giving the taxpayers to understand under-stand tat it would take 3500 to cover the necessary expenditures for improvements improve-ments He also recommended that a plan be adopted to make sure of the prompt payment of tuition fees This last suggestion subsequently caused considerable con-siderable discussion Elder C C Richards Rich-ards making the most sensible remarks on the subject and Elder E H Ander sons motion b adopted to the effect that the tution fee be required to be paid in or about the middle of each term Elders W I Wright I 1 Rolopp John Scowcroft Joseph Stanford E Stratford and B White besides some minor ecclesiastical fry made themselves mousy on the question of authorizing the trustees to make the 3500 worth of improvements im-provements They were finally sustained sus-tained Old man Shupe and J l1 Thomas made fools of themselves with medieval backwood rudeness although the former rightly remarked My brethren we want competent teachers Thats what one half of the taxpayers and the heaviest half think as proven by the fact that they do not send their children to the public schools Manns manum facet One hand washes the other and on Elder Richards motion the trustees were allowed 200 each for their years services In fact they have deserved that much i anything Then the taxpayers meeting was adjourned ad-journed sine die and the legal voters meeting was declared open Elder Stanford Stan-ford chairman and Elder A T Wright secretary for the purpose of elect ing a trustee for the three years term On Biehop Stratfords motion the chair was empowered to appoint one judge of election from each ecclesiastical ward five of them to which no Church andState oh no 1 lie clung and carried his theological point Elders C C Richards T J Stevens S Stephens E H Anderson and George W Anderson were the elect Elders John Watson the gifted manager of the Z C 11 1 A C Brown and Wm F Critchlow an alleged autodidactic pedagogue were put in nomination and of course the first named was elected by a large majority of this exclusively ChurchoverState assemblage as-semblage And then
