Show OUR PACIFIC FLEET j What is Thought of Our Chances in I HawaIi WASHINGTON July 12fhe Department I of State is still in official ignorance i of the revolution in Hawaii First Assistant Secretary Secre-tary Porter said today that the Department Depart-ment did not expect to hear anything for four or five days yet not until the dispatches dis-patches which Minister Merrill sent on the Mariposa shall have been sent overland from Ban Francisco and received in Washington One of the prominent officers of the Department was asked how much force the United States had in the Pacific at present HWe havent any was the reply at least none to speak oft The Pacific squadron with the exception of tho Alert are wooden sloops and carry from six to eight smoothbore gnus worth ns much as a boys popgnn when compared with modern artillery The Alert is an old vessel of 100 tons and carries four guns If the fleet wore to Le mobilized it would take about ten years I guess if it ever could be done The Adams has been at Honolulu since June 14th the Yandnlia is probably half way between Callao and Hawaii the Juniata is in Central American wateis bound to China via the Sandwich Islands the Mohican is on the west coast of South America probably near Peru the the Iroquois is at San Francisco being repaired re-paired and the Alert must be somewhere near the Mohioan The complement of officers and men carried by tho Pacific fleet is about 1300 officers and men The crew force England has in Pacific waters could be rapidly concentrated con-centrated All the vessels are in good condition con-dition build after last models and carry rifled cannon of large calibre and not old smooth bores like Uncle Sam has but I dont think we need fear any danger from England as I have always understood that a perfect understanding un-derstanding exists between Uncle Sam end England regard to Hawaii but Germany night try to have preponderating influence thereon She is now eeguged in n Colonial policy and is trying to extend her power elsewhere Vie can never afford to see any other country obtain the overshadowing influence in-fluence in Hawaiian affairs and if necessary to prevent it we should go to war |
