Show RAILWAY RATTLE I InterState Commerce ana the flail vay Commission NEW YOKE July 12The first case before the InterState Commerce Commission to be adjusted the refunding of an alleged overcharge is that of Mrs JK Stahl of Walla Walla Washington Territoryogainst the Oregon Railway Navigation Company Captain Bragg on behalf of the Commission Commis-sion forwarded the complaint to the railroad rail-road people requesting an investigation had and it was found that an overcharge been made and it was ordered that the be refunded The companys attor money have filed their reply to the effect that neys the complaint the beer kegs over which arose were shipped from Milwaukee that that the rates were fixed by the company which the respondent has no control over and that said rates were not unreasonable and not unjust Notwithstanding this however respondent says it has fully satisfied satis-fied complainant in respect to all matters connected with said shipment of beer kegs Mrs Stahls request for 20 in full settlement settle-ment and complete satisfaction for over I wE charges is enclosed and her complaint is withdrawn Answers have been received by the Commission Com-mission from the Oregon Railway and Navigation Nav-igation i Company to the complaints of Wm H Heed and Milton Evans of Walla Walla These oases are said to praotically involve the interests of a large wheatgrowing region re-gion The complaints are in substance that the charge or 6 a ton for transportation of grain from Walla Walla to Portland is excessive ex-cessive and unreasonable The company sots forth that its line between Portland and Walla Walla is construoted through a rugged region with practically no intermediate interme-diate traffic that its operating expenses greatly in excess of the average expenses of other lines and that it is frequently blockaded block-aded by snow storms and earthslides which subject it to extraordinary expenditures The whole traffic freight and passenger between be-tween Portland and Walla Walla inclusive amounted during the even months ended May 311P87 to 606405 and the operating expenses for the same period amounted to 792490 wheat being the principal article of transportation The cars ore necessarily hauled empty one way The company declares de-clares that the lowegtjarso spoBwbeat JUWI > ilwavi Por and previous tot to-t tuaqjifee faa < istooperation was f 12 aioo thatyearbyyear as the country has inoreaed in populatioi the rates have deorea ed and that in anticiprtion of a large yield in 1887 rates have already and voluntarily been reduced to 5 a ton to take effect from July C It avers that the adop tionof thorntea prayed for3 a ton would make it impossible to pay the operating expenses ex-penses and would prevent the construction of new branch lines under way and in contemplation con-templation and the effect would be to destroy de-stroy defendants entire property as an investment in-vestment DEKVEE July 12The Pacific Railway Investigating Committee consisting of er Governor Robert E Pattison of Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania Ellery Anderson of New York and David > F Littler of Illinoisarrived in this city yesterday morning John Norris of Philadelphia accompanies the commission as statistician and Charles P Young of New York as secretary The commission held a session yesterday afternoon in a parlor of I tho Windsor Hotel |
