The Brethren Paralyzed Mormon Strongholds CapturedSandy nOl Murray Victorious Free Schools Hereafter The main subject of discussion on the street today has been the result of last nights school election In six districts the brethrens nominees were defeated and the Gentiles men voted in This glorious result makes the Gentiles laugh and the Saints groan It is the greatest victory yet achieved in the Territory not only on account of snatching the positions of six trustees from the priests thereby Rutting the public schools on a higher plain but it shows farther the nominal strength of the American element el-ement in this city and the numerical I weakness of the Church party Below we give the result of the six victorious districts in this city and those of Murray I and Sandy in the county TIE SEVENTH WINS AGAIN Three years ago the Seventh District put in B G Raybould the first Gentile I trustee ever elected in this city The following fol-lowing year T C Bailey was elected and last evening F M Bishop took off the laurels from David McKenzie with a majority ma-jority of thirtyfive votes Next year another good and loyal man wiI get there Kali for the Seventh the banner Gentile District in the Territory THE EIGHTH GETS ONE lu the Eighth District there was a lively fight the Gentiles coming out ahead of the brethren in good shape electing C 0 Whittemore by a vote of G to 50 a against J D H McAllister THE TWELFTH VICTORIOUS Prof Mtllspaugh led the Saints a chase in the above district winning by thirty majority against the Priesthoods nominee nomi-nee T D Lyon There was great excitement ex-citement at the meeting making it one of the livliest ever held in the building TRIUMPhANT IN TIE THIRTEENTH In that quondam Mormon stronghold tlifi Thirteenth ward the Gentiles suc ceeded in electing their annE B Critchelow by a handsome majority of fiftythree while Brother Wm Naylor went begging with sixty vote only seven more that Critchlovs majority THE FOURTEENTH LOYAL AT LAST All was not well for the Saints in Bishop Taylors district the Fourtrenth Here thc Loyalists scoop the Traitors beautifully with a 107 ballot for L f Farnsworth while T G Webber went home and slept on a vote of 72 for himself him-self At this meeting they had a strong time of it Prof C F Wilcox undertook under-took t insult the Gentiles Old man Rosborough arose in his might and dignity dig-nity and sat down on the priestly teacher teach-er who dropped into his seat amid hisses and cries of derision THE TENTH TO TIC FRONT At the Tenth district everything worked harmoniously on the surface but in their boots the elders of Israel were galled so that they winced and squirmed when they were forced to take their medicine med-icine in bearing home with them the reflection re-flection and fact that they were beauti fully left The meeting was held in the new school house which is without an exception ex-ception in Utah second to none as an educational edifice The people in that part of the city and the trustees of the I district are entitled to the highest credit for having erected so beautiful and so useful a house At the meeting last night two men were put in nomination for the position of trustee The men were William Fuller and William Taylor Tay-lor Mr John M Young made a rousing rous-ing speech nominating Fuller I took the breath out of the brethren and won several votes over for the candidate the result being that Fuller was elected by 9 majority amid the first applause to make the new building ring The retiring re-tiring trustee William Taylor was given a rousing vote of thanks for his efficient labors as one of the board aud as the chief mover and director of the new school house GENERAL NOTES In nearly all the districts the Church outfit has a printed ticket all ready to spring on the voters I had been fixed up in secret caucus News has been sent from Murry that tholoyal f lows of the district downed the Traitors Good for the Murrayites Sandy made a hard brave fight They had a high time in the little town Several Sev-eral times a row seemed imminent The total vote cast was 92 equally divided between the Mormon and Gentile votes They balloted twice the Gentiles being able to sustain the challenge of a Mormon Mor-mon vote thus giving the election t H P Johnson TIE DEMOCRAT congratulates congratu-lates the plucky little man He is a worker from away back Shake The Eleventh District lost the election r purely through the negligence of the Gentile voters Had they been Gente voter organized organ-ized victory would have been sure As it was Old Crow was elected over J C lloyle who was nominated in a neat speech by Col E Sells lloyle received 29 votes only half of which were cast by sureenough Gentiles Had the Gentiles Gen-tiles been out in force with a printed ticket they would have captured a great many Mormon votes which would have elected a Gentile trustee The rumor that the Fourth and Fifth Districts had gone Liberal was either a mistake or a joke as there was no opposition oppo-sition t speak of in either of them At the Eleventh District meeting W H Sells nominated Judge Iloge as one of the tellers In the face of this a fellow Childs by name and child by nature jumped up and named Mayor Armstrong who respectfully declined in favor of Judge loge All the same the Church gang voted in the Mayor and the Judge was left Minority representation represen-tation didnt count worth a cent at the tton Eleventh Ward last evening |
