Show THE ONLY ONE It has generally been thought that when all the world agreed on a subject that the world was sane and that when one man declared all the rest to be insane in-sane the one man was the one who was truly insane Now the Herald of this city this morning says that because the newspapers generally throughout the country comment unfavorably on the Declaration of Grievances and Protest that all this merely illustrates the thoughtlessness and inconsiderate character char-acter of too much of the editorial edi-torial matter that goes to the country It was very wrong for the press of the country to condemn that remarkable paper known as the Declaration and Protest as it took thirteen men thirty days to draw it up and so weighty was it that it required three men to carry it to Washington Then the fact that this same document closely followed the language lan-guage of the Epistle of the Presidency is another reason why the editors of the country should not write of it so inconsiderately inconsid-erately But the most inconsiderate thing of all is the Declaration and Protest itself as it is in no part considers flip question to be solved in Utah It pro tests everything and proffers nothing Did it ever dawn the upon editor of the Herald that possibly the wildest editor of all is the one whose sanctum is in the wilds of West Temple street Perhaps he declines to answer or has forgotten or never did know So far as we have been able to see the editors of the whole country haye looked upon the Declara tion and Protest as it deserved to be No one denies that the Mormon people have a right to petition but the right to peti tion is not the same as a petition of rights The petition of the people entirely over looked the fact that the United States has some rights in the United States and made no mention of them or whether the they shoud be respected re-spected It was inconsiderately one sided entirely too much so to go before the country as a fair statement of things I as they actually exist in Utah Not only i are the editors of the country wrong in their view of the Declaration and Protest but many who have lived all their lives in Utah and even some very good Mor mons and some of the Territorial officials are wrong in their view of the document according to the Heralds editorial But when one reads the Heralds edi I tonal over the question comes to the mind What arc the wild waves saying sister but no answer comes back |
