Show I THE PINE CREEK MINES An Experts Opinion of the Gold Mines in Eastern Oregon I Ii i John A Paul the mining expert returned re-turned a f6w days ago from the Pine I Creek mines which he critically examined exam-ined Mr Faull has had over thirty years experience in the mining business and his views are valuable for this reason Yesterday he a seen by a News reporter re-porter and his opinion asked of the new discoveries There are two or three mines so far developed in Pine Creek district The ore is exceedingly base carrying arsenic bismuth nickel copper and iron In fact it is the most rebellious ore yet found on the Pacific Coast Yet it can be successfully success-fully treated was evidenced by the satisfactory satis-factory returns made in the 3000 pounds shipped to and worked at the Omaha reduction re-duction works There are however ore free gold veins which are twenty inches wide and look promising The greatest depth which has been attained in any of the workings is thirteen feet H Does the formation indicate permanency perma-nency Yes sir the formation topography the dikes running through the mountains similar in appearance to those at Pine Creek have made lasting and profitable mines in other districts The main vein is three feet in width but the development develop-ment to date have been limited The surface sur-face indications are favorable but the extent ex-tent of the deposit not known There are numerous croppings on the surface near the main vein but whether they are veins or merely boulders that have been disintegrated from the principal deposit de-posit cannot b told until more work has been done on them Wood and water is abundant and water power is near at hand so the facil ities for reduction works and timber for all mining purposes are unexceptionable Hay is cheap ditto flour and grouse and deer can be had by shooting them The great necessity of the region is capital to build roads and to develop the mines The Oregon Short line is endeavoring to secure the trade of this region by the I Snake River route It is a very hard route this way The road from the Grande Ronde valley is ever so much nearer and more practicable Portland should bestir herself and aid in building I a road from the Oregon Railway and Navigation Companys line to these mines I I this is not done the Short Line people will secure a trade which is abundantly worth striving forPortland News |
