Show THEY ARE DETERMINED The Ogden Herald of last night has an article entitled The Old Cry in which i it attempts to show the terrible character charac-ter of all who do not affiliate with the party to which it belongs It speaks of the Judiciary of the Territory in these terms lilt is by reason of this debauchery of the I judiciary Utah that characterless and irresponsible I ir-responsible blatherskites are enabled to cloak themselves in an ephemeral importance I import-ance it is by virtue of this shameful arrangement ar-rangement that whoremongers and exsocial outcasts are made the chief instruments of a mighty nation in the enforcement of a special law ostensibly enacted for the preservation pres-ervation of society Whatever may be the merits or demerits de-merits of the Judiciary of Utah however prejudiced they may be against the Mormons Mor-mons that charge is founded upon falsehood false-hood and prompted by the basest of motives of base minds Such charges are I the outpourings of a soul that deems all means justifiable to attain an end To substantiate its charges such a soul would deem it a high virtue to lie to cheat to steal aye to murder if necessary But such arguments are not new with such j people and papers as the Ogden Herald I When they are opposed politically and it i i have no answer to make to fair and j t honest argument they resort to the vili1 fl I fication of character and the defamation i of names Following the above charge i i comes this statement But it it preposterous to say that all laws I are intrinsically just and ought to be obeyed i i sabniissively merely because they have been i enacted and pronounced Constitutional by the Supreme Court I It may be preposterous to say that all I laws are just but it is not preixjsteroua to I say that all Constitutional laws should be I obeyed If laws are obnoxious the way i in which to meet them is by agitating for their repeal but not by openly denouncing denounc-ing them and covertly evading them I Such evasions are inconsistent with good I citizenship and with manhood Abovo i and beyond all governments and guarantees I guar-antees there exists the right of revolu Ilion I-lion and if men choose to exercise that right the world will accord itthem But i j those who resort to thi right must re1 I I member that those against whom they i exercise it also possess the same right I andif those who resortto it are beaten i in the struggle they should not complain i foritwas an old idea with a semblance lof i reason in it that trial by wager of bat1 I tie was Gods way of deciding a dispute I and that God sided with the victor 1 The Herald compares the evasions of i i i the fugitive slave law by the Abolitionists j I Abolition-ists with the evasions of the Edmunds and other acts by the people of this Territory j Ter-ritory and closes its article thus i It is upon this principle that honest and 1 loftyminded patriotic Mormons are determined deter-mined to oppose the Edmunds law to the last cost what it niay to the end that intrinsic I in-trinsic right and justice may be ultimately i t vindicated and their posterity served from a I i i wrongful abridgement of their most sacred t liberties i I 1 Every one in Utah is familiar with tho i I manner in which the Edmunds law has i I been opposed and from this it would I seem that the opposition will continue on I the same lines It is a matter of surprise I when one reads about the determination of honest and loftyminded 1 patriotic I patri-otic Mormons to oppose the Ed munds law that they have never declared their opposition to this law by calling for its repeal in their political platforms and never have elected a Delegate Dele-gate who had enough interest in them and the repeal of this law and others of a like nature to call the attention of Congress Con-gress to the matter and ask them to repeal I re-peal these unjust laws Isit i possible that I the people of Utah have never elected a Delegate and that for this reason these things have not been done This last remark of the Herald overlooks one great factor in tho Utah problem and one that is too little considered by the people of Utah when announcing their determination to oppose the Edmunds law to the last cost what it may which fact isthe Government is determined to enforce the Edmunds law and all others cost what it may Let the Herald tell this to its readers also |
