Show Afghans Stol Some Russian Troops j i LONDON August 21A dispatch sent today to-day from Meshed Persia near the Afghan frontier to the Times states that collision j between the Russian and the Afghan troops j nearly occurred on the 13th instant at Kar atepe eighteen miles from Chamnnibnid i Some Russian troops so the dispatch states i t approached Karatepe and tho Afghan I troops there stood to their arms The Russian Rus-sian officer when he saw this ordered his troopers to unsling their carbines and he J was shot and severely wounded by the accidental acci-dental discharge of one of these weapons j I Before the exact nature of this accident i ac-cident was ascertained there was considerable con-siderable excitement and confusion which I however subsided as soon as the truth was made known The Afghans then detained I the Russians until they received orders from Herat to let them go During the detention I the Afghans treated the wounded Russian j officer with great kindness bandaging his i wound and sent him back to the Russian j lines A hurried investigation of the occurrence j occur-rence was made on both sides The Russian commander exonerated the Afghans and promised that the troopers should not again I advance beyond Chemanibad i Four English officers continue to supervise super-vise the work of repairing and strengthening strengthen-ing the forts of Herat |
