Show THE INTENTION The great and dangerous power of the railroad corporations called for public action These dangerous powers must be restrained The public must be protected pro-tected The power of therailroads was unchecked They could charge as the spirit moved them and when did it fail to move for freights or fares and were answerable to none They could favor a rich customer and enable him to ruin a competitor in business and the sufferer suf-ferer could obtain no redress In fact the railroad corporations of the United States were tyrannical opportunities oppor-tunities promptly and efficiently taken advantage of Hence the InterState law This law in intention says that all travelers and freight shall be treated alike that no favors shall be shown j that no man shall be ruined because the railroads want his money and have found a legal way to steallit that not only shall the public be defended but that the great marauders shall be protected pro-tected against each other This is what the occasion calls for and this is what the InterState law intends in-tends This intention is backed by the Nation Crude as is the vehicle by which the demand de-mand of the Nation is expressed that demand must have more or less weight Already the powerful Chicago BHrling ton Quincy road has been compelled to forego certain oppressive robber privileges priv-ileges The InterState law is the friend of the shipper of the producer of the consumerof the people What power it exerts must be beneficial |
