Show r 1 t t I 0 < I ENVIED AMERICA Even other nation on earth knows not which way to turn to pay its debts We know not which way to turn to dispose dis-pose of our surplus revenue The United States alone amid the nations has a surplus Ever other civilized nation has a yearly deficit it spends more than it receives Germany alone is somewhat better situated for it owns its great lines l of railways and has other assets which if sold would bring more than its national debt The extraordinary advantages we have over other nations is profoundly impressing im-pressing the people of other countries The following extract from an English financial circular tells itsjown story Without venturing to express an opinion we may nevertheless call attention at-tention to a few facts which bear on this point In less than tventy years the United States have reduced their debt by about 220000000 They ended their fiscal year 18S6 with a surplus of about 18000000 They added during 18U to their system of railways 8600 miles making in all 130000 miles worked by 27000 locomotives costing approximately approxi-mately 1650000000 In six years 18801886 the population increased 20 per cent namely from 50 000000 to 61000000 In 1885 they raised 357000000 bushels of wheat in 1880 they raised 457000000 bushels an increase of more than 27 per cent or 100000000 bushels In 1885 their shipping ports received 4451663 bales of cotton in 1886 they received 5177235 bales an increase of more than 11M per cent or 725572 bales In comparison with these figures the progress of all other countries becomes be-comes insignificant Is it any wonder that the tide of emigration is again setting set-ting for our shores The above figures could be extended For instance the metal and mineral products of the United States had Uspot value of 430000000 as against 292000000 for the mineral products of Great Britain in the same year The mineral production of this year it is estimated will be fully 500 000000 We shall build 12000 miles of new railroads in 1887 Our largest previous pre-vious year was in 1883 when we built some 8000 miles of road Then we are at peace with all the world and have no use for our army but we think it prudent to have a few ships and big guns to guard our sea coasts against possible complications with other nations na-tions Truly is America is to be envied And this envy of the nations is growing yearly Within the last two or three years this envy has had by far the greatest growth And why Because within that time the National debt has been reduced with almost al-most phenomenal rapidity Because the resources of the Nation have been allowed al-lowed full play Because the money of the people to the last dollar has been devoted to the peoples interests Because Be-cause National Administration has been National business Because the public coffers are no longer drained by private plunder Because the pocket of the people is no longer visited by party greed Because official pickings are now applied to public needs Because fraud corruption Republicanism has been banished ban-ished Because Democracy has returned from exile and the people have their own again These are the reasons why the National debt is disappearing like the mists before the sun This is the reason why there is a vast and increasing surplus in the peoples peo-ples treasury This is the reason why the United States are the envied of Nations Na-tions This is also the reason in legitimate extension ex-tension why this vast surplus is on the eve of bringing wealth to the people while redounding to the honor of the Nation abroad Yet a short time and this yearly surplus will no longer appear ap-pear It will be in existence however but it will exist in the pockets and purses pur-ses of the people in place of in the vaults of the National Treasury It will be bringing happiness and prosperity comfort com-fort and contentment to the homes of American labor The mission of Democracy De-mocracy is to the Nation The work of Democracy is with the people Democracy De-mocracy is not only political freedom It is financial liquidation Democracy is paying the debt of the Nation Democracy De-mocracy will pay the debts of the people |
