Show Volunteering To Help the Community By Ashlee Hartt Contributing Writer Getting involved in the community community community through volunteering is a great way for students to connect with society and help pull people together er for a common cause according to the Thayne Community Service Center Liz Gaitan and Laura workers at the center said there are area a wide range of volunteer opportunities ties available for students interested in community service The center is involved in the America Reads program accepting President Bill Clinton's challenge to educate our youth Volunteers help tutor young children in reading as aswell aswell aswell well as help plan activities like field days and assist in arts and crafts Currently positions are available at Whittier and Redwood elementary elementary elementary elemen elemen- tary schools for those interested in involvement in youth education Other opportunities are also available in areas such as environmental environmental environmental environ environ- mental protection homelessness senior citizen interaction the Big Brother and Big Sister programs victims' victims advocacy health care and more Many volunteers are students who may be unsure of their majors and looking for assurance or who want to gain experience in their specialty specialty specialty said Students have come from programs in education education education tion social services and criminal justice This can make a great opportunity for the community as aswell aswell aswell well as the participants she said Positions are available for individual individual individual indi indi- vidual students faculty and alumni However there are also possibilities for groups clubs and other organizations organizations organizations looking to donate some time The Center is located on the Redwood Campus in the Northeast corner If you are interested in hearing more or would like to sign up you are encouraged to call or stop by and discover the many opportunities available |
