Show Mountain View Playground Unveiled I t r- r By Clarke Caldwell News Editor On May 10 three students from fromI I the site planning architecture course along with their adviser f Steve Mansfield unveiled a inch 1 to foot 20 scale model of a playground playground play play- I ground designed for the students of j Mountain View Elementary Pete Auerbach Carlos I and John Michie were among about about- 15 students 1 who planned and worked on the estimated project It was fun seeing their needs turn into my ideas and then into our model said Auerbach who built the display case for the model and was heavily involved in the design Jolene Bell a kindergarten teacher at Mountain View got the project started off when she called Mansfield earlier this spring and asked for assistance This is unbelievable said Bell who didn't even expect a return phone call I never would have dreamed the college would be willing to get involved but I 1 am very thankful these Salt Lake Community College students worked with us They took the time timeto to meet with us incorporate our ideas and then they went all out and created a model I 1 would've been satisfied with a drawing The architectural students spent two weeks s gathering data including hosting 20 second to sixth grade students and three teachers at the college to share ideas Mansfield also the chairman for technical specialties division division division divi divi- sion was made aware of the project three weeks into the Spring Quarter and shifted his class curriculum to accommodate Mountain Views View's request He decided that he would incorporate the elementary schools school's need as a service learning project for his architectural technology stu stu- stu- stu dents Mansfields Mansfield's class which normally normally normally nor nor- mally would meet a couple times a week met day and night for five days to start and complete the model The enthusiasm level of the students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents has been incredible said Mansfield taken a real ownership of this project contributing contributing contributing ing more time than anticipated to construct it as well as their own money for materials Its It's given them something worthwhile to learn and has given to the community by adding value to the class beyond the normal textbooks According to Bell Mountain MountainView MountainView MountainView View Elementary is considered an risk at-risk school which receives Title I 1 funding She added that having an updated playground with a nature area and walking track would give a boost the the community Mansfield said that his students have gained valuable experience throughout the project By working together quickly the students learned teamwork site planning model-making model skills as aswell aswell aswell well as the joy that comes from service service service ser ser- ser ser- vice said Mansfield They become familiar with the pressures of working with clients under strict deadlines and learned how to gather information such as site restrictions form many sources oil 4 r 4 An L It H L Y Iy Jo i 4 j JI L i ix x c a J Photos courtesy of Public Information Office Top students from left Pete Auerbach John Michie Technical Specialties Division Chair Steve Mansfield and Carlos display the playground model Bottom Mountain View Elementary celebrates their proposed playground L dr e m 4 r rw ri c i c w wc w If 4 y I a P |
