PTA recognizes top students, Senator Barlow By JUDY JENSEN BOUNTIFUL-"PTA Risingin Excellence" was the theme of the Region Three Awards Banquet held at Mueller Park Junior High on May 15. The event was attended by this year's Reflections Contest winners and their parents and members of the PTA and the School Board. Senator Haven Barlow Bar-low was an honored guest. Students Stu-dents who were chosen as winners in this year's PTA sponsored competition com-petition were awarded plaques in recognition of their accomplishments. accomplish-ments. Many of the students winning entries were on display. One of the young men honored, Boone S. Sayo, had his photograph chosen as a state winner and the photograph has been sent on to national na-tional competition. According to Katie Falkman, Reflections Coordinator Coor-dinator for the Davis County PTA, the 20 winners were chosen out of more than 600 entries. The music winners are Chris Baker, Douglas Brewer, Leslie Jeanne Reese, Melinda Skidmore and Christine Larsen. The photography photo-graphy winners are Kelly Sansom, Boone S. Xayyo, (Sayo), Allyson White and Holly Badger. The five winners in literature are, Dusty Scott, Brad Matthews, Chris Snell, Susan Jensen and Allyne Beazer. In visual arts the winners are Cindy Gledhill, Mike Shifflet, Molly Win-borg, Win-borg, Scott Brough and Jenny Brown. Director of Davis County Region Three PTA, Edrice Christensen, made special presentations to PTA presidents and other board members. mem-bers. Davis County Schoot Board President Sheryl Allen made a special spe-cial presentation to Senator Haven J. Barlow recognizing him as "the best friend we have on Capitol Hill." "We are so fortunate to have him because he's got a lot of influence, influ-ence, but not enough," she laughed, "but he's working on it." Shauna Nakaya, Davis County Legislative Representative for the PTA, presented Senator Barlow with another award saying that "he's an exceptional friend to PTA. He outshines everyone on Capitol Hill and he always takes time to listen. She said she thinks his sensitivity to children comes from his supportive wife, Bonnie and said they would like to thank her for her support also. When Senator Barlow accepted the award he agreed with Nakaya about Mrs. Barlow. He said he didn't get the chance to thank her publicly very often and he wanted her to know how much he appreciated appreci-ated her. He also thanked the PTA for all of the time the members spend on behalf of the children in Utah. Teachers, John Robinson and Jim Hill were also given special recognition for the work they have done with students involved in the teen alcohol and drug abuse program. |
