Show Three local students win Merit Scholarships BOUNTIFUL -- Three local high school seniors found out this morning that they have been awarded $2,000 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. WINNERS locally were Nathan D. Moore of Bountiful High. Robert S. Ward of Woods Cross High and Layne R. Flake of Viewmont High. These three were among 13 Utah high school seniors receiving the awards. Nationally, the corporation awarded 1 .800 scholarships. Nathan is the son of Wayne and Eileen Moore of Bountiful. He plans to pursue corporate law as a profession. Nathan was a Sterling Scholar finalist, vice president of his LDS council, and active in school organizations. ROBERT IS the son of Raymond and Isabel Ward of Bountiful. Bounti-ful. He plans on studying electrical engineering, and was a general finalist in Sterling Scholar competition. He was assistant assis-tant drum major at Woods Cross, active in music and drama as well. Layne is the son of Garry and Janet Flake of Centerville, and also plans to pursue electrical engineering. He was a Sterling Scholar finalist, a member of the National Honor Society for two years, and active in music. He especially enjoys math and computers. THE 1,800 winners were chosen from 13,500 finalists. Next fall when these students enter college, the NMSC will send each of them a single payment of $2,000 to be used for their education. educa-tion. In addition to these scholarships, the NMSC will award a total of 4.0(H) more this year, bringing the worth of scholarships to well over $21 million. The corporation receives financial support from hundreds of businesses and corporations nationwide. In 31 years, over 97.000 high school students have been given awards. : i |
