Show BtfL Brave Rave pet the jacket once the requirements require-ments have been met? SPAFF: There's an application in the office that has to be filled out, and once it's been approved by Counselor Carver and Principal Perkins, it can be used to prove eligibility. The jacket may then be bought. I think Village Sports Den is the closest place to get them. RAVE: Suppose a student can't afford the jacket ? SPAFF: It is completely acceptable accept-able for a student to letter without any intention of buying a letter jacket. Many athletes letter :!.-out :!.-out ever buying a jacket, and that's expected with the Academic Letter too. BRAVE: Speaking of athletes, doesn't the Academic Letter infringe in-fringe on their right to be recognised? recog-nised? SPAFF: I don't ::"k so. but that of buying both jackets. RAVE: What if a student meets the Academic letter requirements in more than three semesters? SPAFF: A gold bar pin is available avail-able for each additional semester in which a letterman makes a 3.8 GPA with two or more honors classes. These must be applied for individually. indi-vidually. RAVE: I guess this makes Bountiful Boun-tiful High one of the only schools anywhere to offer letters for academics. acade-mics. Is that right? SPAFF: Well, actually. BHS is only one of many schools in the nation to sponsor an Academic Letter program. Viewmont High, for example, is in the second year of theirs. But most schools don't have a program like this, and it's nice to think that our schools could be trend setters for a future nationwide nation-wide program. We'll just have to see what happens. liy The B.R. Investigative Team A new era has just begun at Bountiful High -- the era of the Academic Letterman. For the first time in its history. Bountiful High is allowing students to "tetter" in the area of academics. The BHS studcntboJy officers have been somewhat involved in the institu- tion of the Academic Letter program prog-ram and one of them. "Spaff." agreed to be interviewed on the subject. RAVE: Tell us. first of all. the main purpose behind the Academic Letter program. SPAFF: Well, basically, the Academic Letter is a form of recognition recog-nition for the high-honor students at BHS. It gives students who have directed their time towards academics acade-mics the opportunity to qualify to wear the BHS letter jacket. RAVE: What are the requirements require-ments for lettering in academics? How difficult is it? SPAFF: There are only a few basic things that must be done to letter. A student must get a high-honor high-honor grade point average (3.8 or better) in any three of his six high school semesters. During each of these semesters, he must be enrolled enrol-led in at least seven classes, two of which must be A. P. or honors classes. RAVE: This means both boys and girls, right? SPAFF: Right. RAVE: How does one actually is a valid point. The original plan was to have both athletes and scho- 4 lars qualify to wear the same jacket. jack-et. But a meeting was held with administrators, students and members mem-bers of the community, and it was agreed that the Athletic Letter should keep its own distinct identity. identi-ty. So a new, red jacket was designed de-signed to represent the Academic Letter, and Athletic Lettermen are still the only ones who may wear the gray one. . RAVE: So what happens if someone letters in both fields? SPAFF: In that case, the academic acade-mic pin may be worn on the athletic jacket or vice-versa. Of course, that student would have the option |
