Show EDITORIALS Needed: More Community Builders IF ANYBODY asked us to say in one sentence what was wrong with this old world, we would say without hesitation: hesita-tion: "There are too many human beings Who are not pulling their share of the load." Here in Sugar House and southeast Salt Lake the problem can be seen at close hand, for we have a liberal share of community parasites. They include both residents and business busi-ness people, but for the moment we will just concern ourselves our-selves with the business people. If you would like to know which business people, are really interested in this community in which you live you should drop in and look through 1948's file of issues of The Bulletin. There is a handful of business people who spearheaded spear-headed all the civic improvements, the charity drives the worthwhile activities which have given this, community its good name. There are others too many of them who have i been all too willing to let the energetic ones do the jobs. The point is, there is much, much more to be done. The willing workers are able to take care of only the most demanding demand-ing jobs. Other important activities, of necessity, are neglected neglect-ed because of lack of willing helpers. By not cooperating in any way, the community parasites are doing this area a great disservice. More than any other single group (if it is possible to group businesses), the chain stores seem to be the most guilty. Constituting a substantial segment of our commercial com-mercial picture, local chain stores, nevertheless, do not assist or aid the community proportionately. We can think of two or three exceptions, of course. We also know of many other independent businessmen who are no more helpful than the greater part of the chain store managers. But it is significant r- that so many of the latter group seem only interested in raking in the profits, and not improving the community. However, we did not write this editorial to regale the chain stores, but to remind all of those who rested on their oars last year that the southeast area has a promising year of progress ahead of it, if everyone will get in and pull. We of The Bulletin staff hope that we will see the names of many more new community builders appear in these col-i. col-i. umns. The community parasites have been too conspicuous by their absence from the activities Which make news. |
