Show Mason Hill Takes Over Warden Job At State Prison Deputy Warden Mason Hill succeeded John E. Harris as warden of the Utah State Prison Monday by action of the state board of corrections. Ending the eight-day "front page" controversy which featured fea-tured a resignation and withdrawal with-drawal of resignation, alleged broken promises, the corrections board made the appointment "effective at once" at a 7:30 a.m. meeting at the office of Herbert A. Snow, retiring board member. Warden Hill took over management of the institution Monday afternoon. Appointment Vote It was reported by W. Keith Wilson, board secretary, that Adrian B. Pembroke and Dr. Burbidge voted for the appointment, appoint-ment, while Mr. Snow cast his vote in the negative. Continued on Page 2 WARDEN ... Continued from Page 1 Mr. Harris resigned last week, explaining he did so at the request re-quest of Governor Lee. On Thursday the governor had sent the name of Mr. Snow to the Senate for confirmation as a re-appointee re-appointee to the board, but later withdrew it, submitting instead the name of John F. Dugan. At a pubic session of the board Saturday, Sat-urday, Mr. Harris said he was withdrawing his resignation because be-cause the governor had violated a "gentlemen's agreement" to appoint Mr. Snow to the board. Acting Warden Mr. Wilson said Monday the board considered the warden's -resignation effective as of last Thursday, and since that time he had been acting warden until un-til a successor could be found. A resident of Bountiful, Mr. Hill is a native of Sale Lake City and a graduate of West High School. For several years he was in the contracting business, busi-ness, and in 1939 joined the state highway patrol. He was promoted pro-moted to sergeant in 1943. and to lieutenant in 1945. He was in charge of the patrol's second division, which includes tiie territory ter-ritory from Wendover to Vernal and from Salt Lake City to Utah County. |
