Post Office Notes Public Cooperaton in Xmeas Mailing Cooperation with postal off icials in sending packages and mail early this year have result ed in speedier and more convenient con-venient service than in years past, according to Mr. W. F. . Walker, superintendent of mails at the Sugar House post office. This is especially true in the foreign mail, Mr. Walker said. By Monday of this week the "rush had leveled off." Seventy-five temporary employes em-ployes are being hired to assist regular post office personnel in handling the increased postal load. The majority of these new employes will assist the regular mail carriers. For the past three weeks men have been added as three weeks has been added a the increased maii demandd. As of Wdnesday three extra clerks and.one carrier had been hired. At peak of the holiday rush a new man will be added for each regular carrier, Supt. Walker stated. Mailing Deadline Supt. Walker advised post office of-fice patrons to act promptly in mailing cards and letters to the east and west coasts. The following dates are "recom mended" by authorities, he said: 1. To the east coast: Dec. 10th. 2-To the west, coast and ' midwest: Dec. 16. 3. To nearby states and rural ru-ral Utah areas: Dec. 18. Most troublesome packages for the post offices are those bulky "suit boxes" Mr. Walker said. People should avoid using them entirely, he stated, if they want to make sure the packages pack-ages arrive safely at their des-intations. des-intations. He urged post office patrons to see that their packages are packed tight. Air spaces in packages are troublesome, as it is in these spaces that the packages cave in. Use good strong packing paper, he urged. Record Month in November Last month the local office noted a large increase in business busi-ness over previous years. Stamip sales were $500 above Nov. 8 of the previous year. Postal notes showed a 100 per cent increase 810,000 over 1947. There were 200 more money orders issued this year than last November. |
