Show UNIVERSITV ' NEWS THE "THOMAS TREE" The first Thomas walnut tree :in the state of Utah was planted last week in front of the George I Thomas Library at the Univer sity of Utah, in honor of the re-j re-j tiring University president, Dr I George Thomas I The ti ee is a' hybrid developed in the Northwest, and combines j the flavor of the common black : walnut with the soft shell and jnutmeats of the English walnut. jThe tree is still rare, having been j introduced only a few years ago. It is estimated that the tree which is named "Thomas" after the biologist who developed it, not after the University president will reach its full maturity in about one hundred years. The "Thomas Tree" is one of seventy-five memorial trees on the "U" campus, most famous of which are the huge flowering Japanese Jap-anese cherries, now almost forty years old, which cover the center of the campus "circle" with a riot of white blooms late in April. Other unusual trees planted by individuals and clubs include a tulip tree, lindens, European birch-sycamore birch-sycamore maples, Chinese elms,1 : and several hundred lilac bushes! 1 which form a "Lilac Lane."
