Show Display o f U. S. Flag Has Enqueue 'Code' THE CORRECT USE OF THE FLAG 1 1 Do not let the flag touch floor or ground. Do not place any object or emblem above the flag. Do not use the flag as drapery. Use bunting. Do not use the flag as part of a costume or uniform. When used on a motor car, the flag should fly from a staff. Do not use the flag in any form of advertising. Above are six tips for flag etiquette as outlined by Mrs. Russell B. Williams Chicago, chairman of the flag committee of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The D. A. R. is in the midst of nationwide campaign to popularize- flag etiquette. I On important national holidays patriotic pa-triotic citizens throughout the country coun-try like to display the American flag as outward evidence of their loyalty toward their nation. On days like these, being familiar with proper flag etiquette is valuable and important. For rather definite and well-defined courtesies toward the national banner have been developed de-veloped in military and civilian practice of flag display. Most people realize in a general way that good care should be given the flag and its use as a common piece of cloth should be avoided. But sometimes lacking is the knowledge knowl-edge of more specific rules regard-ing regard-ing its display. Compiled here are a few rules of flag etiquette for the display and use of "Old Glory.' C. When the flag is displayed on a wall, the stars should be toward the left with the stripes floating to the right. C When hanging with the stripes in a vertical position, the stars should always appear in the upper left hand corner. C. On parade, the American flag always al-ways claims the place of honor at the right. C, When flown at half-staff, the flag should be hoisted to the peak for aa instant and then lowered to the half-staff half-staff position. Before lowering the flag, it should be raised again to t he-peak. he-peak. On Memorial day, May 30,. the flag should be displayed at half-staff half-staff from sunrise until noon and at full staff from noon until sunset. C. The flag must not be used as a table cloth. Nothing but the Bible should rest upon the flag. C Never display the American flag with the union down except as a. signal of distress. C. The flag should never be used to decorate platforms or stands, or" draped in any fashion for decorating decorat-ing purposes. C. When used to cover a casket, the flag should be placed so that the stars are at the head in the upper right-hand corner (over the hearty looking from the foot. The flag should not be lowered into the grave-nor grave-nor allowed to touch the ground. C No other flag should be hoisted above the American flag except it church pennant, which can be flown from the masthead above the Stars and Stripes when religious services are in progress in a military chapet or aboard a United States navy ship.. |
