They are just as true today as they were when they were adopted on July 4, 1776. Almost insurmountable problems faced the tiny republic ivhen it decided to tear itself loose from the powerful British empire. The battles of Lexington and Concord had been fought, and the colonies were actually at war with England, but many persons hesitated to take the irrevocable step of demanding de-manding independence. To explain and justify the decision to establish a new, democratic nation, the Founding Fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence. |
