Show Invention on Shooting Oil Wells Led to 16,000 Suits The invention of the Roberts Torpedo Tor-pedo in 1866 was followed by the greatest patent litigation in American Amer-ican history, says Collier's. Before the legality of its patent was upheld up-held by the United States Supreme court in 1880, this device for shooting shoot-ing oil wells was so widely infringed in-fringed upon that more than 16,000 suits and countersuits were filed, all those brought to a decision being won by the inventor. |
