New Subscription Drive In keeping with the above editorial of the Independent we are chalking up another first, for us, at least; and are going all out on a subscription drive. We are attempting to place the Indepen-dent in 7,500 additional homes in a two month period. We are organizing groups of individuals, boy scout age, to do this work for us. We will cover the areas of Sugar House, Canyon Rim, Evergreen, Holladay, Cottonwood, Butler and we are attempting to get started in the Granger area. We are serious about our attempts to make this newspaper a good one. We need your sup-port and the support of all the communities. If you know of any named category, let us know. We'll groups that fall in the above do the contact work. You can see on page 4 & 5 what the winners of this drive will receive. It's worth it. House Kiwanis will act as final Members of the Sugar judges. and the final tabulation of the The drawings for the Sea Champ wins the big convertable subscriptions to determine which group cruiser will be done sometime in the future at a regular Tuesday meeting at Harmons cafe. , LETTERS TO the mm Starting with this issue, the South . East Independent will reserve this space for a weekly feature, Letters to the Editor. This is your neighborhood paper. The editors of the paper will publish all letters providing they are: 1- -Slgned 2--And are In good taste. Address all letters to: Editor, South East Independent 2020 South Main, Salt Lake City 15, Utah Letters to the editor The mighty Jordon River rolls along with its same banks as before, ungarded banks that is, that could and will claim more lives, If action is not taken on a project to fence this demon. It is time that the residents of Salt Lake City rose up and demanded, not requested, that something be done to aleviate this situation. We all make contributions to many so-call- ed charitable tirives that directly do not concern us. I, for one, could probably be classed at the top of this list. Even though I do not live near this' area and would not be directly influenced or profited by such project, I would give my wholehearted support, including time, anergy and money to see that something was done about it. . It Is high time that not only the city fathers but the state officials as well, took an immediate and genuine interest in a project to eliminate this hazard., Our City Fathers are going to tap money out of the General Fund to pay for con-struction on Derks Field, this .is taxpayers money. Our legi-slature tabbed $500,000 of tax-payers monev to build a replica of the old Salt Lake Theatre. Let's forget about the cost of a project that will save lives so that the young may' live to enjoy this ball field and this replica: Lets put the horse before : the ' cart Instead of the cart before the horse, so to speak. Let the leaders of our city and state, along with the rest of the legislators rise np and prove they are leaders by immediately commencing a project to stop the sacrifice of our young ones so that they, too might live to enjoy life like the rest of us are doing. May I suggest that You -- Prove it! Joseph U. Beck East Mill Creek Lions - Last Saturday was a big day for the East Mill Creek Lions Club and for parents and children irt the area. The occasion was the Lions' "Bicycle Safety Program." The Lions landed a solid blow for safety when they inspected bicycles of the area's children at Sherman, East Mill Creek, Morningside and Canyon Rim schools. t The Lions assigned club members to each school and the mem-bers entered! into the spirit of the day wholeheartedly. Children brought their bicycles to the school and the Lions handledjhe safety inpection. Members who couldn't take part in the safety inspection, helped judge entries in the safety slogan contest. The East Mill Creek Lions deserve the thanks of all parents in the neighborhood for their work. The safety of our children Is important to all of us and the Lions took a big stepi in the right direction with their safety inspection. The Safety Slogan contest winners will be named sometime next week. We are sure that the slogan will be a good one. But our vote right now goes to the sponsors of the program.. They did a fine job and all of us appreciate it. Thanks From Jaycees On behalf of the Salt Lake Junior Chamber of Commerce I wish to thank, through the media of your paper, the wonderful; people whose help and cooperation helped us to make this years issue of the Spring-Clea- n Up project such a fine success. As you know, many people were interested enough in our "house painting party" to call in with names and addresses of needy souls in the valley -- I just wish that we had enough equipment to take care of them all. People also were interested in the cleanup end of this project as witnessed by our office which was kept busy answering calls about the "trash pick-up- " and the slogan contest. All in all, it was a very big success, due largely to the . efforts of interested citizens of Salt Lake. I would appreciate your making our thanks a kind of .a public thing so that all of the great city of Salt Lake City could receive it Thank you for your con-sideration. Wray M.
