CET HEADY TO GO South High School track coach Xate Long, left, who will handle the big AAU meet at U. U. Saturday, has his own sprinters Dennis Zito, Dave Ladefinch and Richard Foutz get ready for Region Three track meet. (See additional pictures on page 8). Record Holders To Appear In Top Events Nate Long, veteran coach at South High School and director of the annual Intermountain AAU meet scheduled at Utah University Saturday, stepped out from under the . shower Wednesday, rubbed himself down with a towel and said: "This year's AAU meet would be a great success If the only entry we had was O'Brien. That man is the most colorful athlete I have ever seen. Do you remember when he was here two years ago? Well, that show was remarkable. We got the best when we got him." Record ITolder Nate was right Perry O'Brien, holder of the world shot put title, is a great athlete. When he was here in 1956, he was sensational. He stole . the show from another U. S. Olympic Olym-pic great, hurdler Jack Davis, and his performance ranks as one of the best ever in this state. , But O'Brien won't be the only attraction in the meet. Ron Morris, Southern California Strider's Club, arid the only man to ever pole vault 15 feet in Utah, is entered along with Bob Voiles, Strider's Club, national nat-ional AAU javelin champion and Michael Larraby, holder of the U. S. 440 yard record. In addition there will be a flock of local stars going after top honors. Athletes from Utah University, BYU, Utah State and Idaho State are entered. Any of the local stars could steal the show, but that will take some doing. The meet will be held at Utah University with the trials scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. and the finals at 1:30 p.m. |
