After rescuing one of his half-brothe- rs from their blazing house, Dukie Cogdill, 32, was trapped when he went back for another and died along with him. Cogdill's mother, Mrs. James Caverty, two sons and two daugh-ters escaped. Return From Trip Mr. and Mrs. G. Williams, 1366 Ramona St., have returned from a trip to Dallas, Texas where they visited their son Niel Will-iams and became acquainted with their new grandson Scott. Their son, who has previously made his home in Pasadena was trans-ferred by his company to Dallas recently. He and his wife, the former Beverlee Nielson are gra-duates of the University of Utah. Rita Carbine, a South High se-nior, was awarded first place in the annual Tribune BYU. Edi-torial - Writing Contest. She was presented with an $80 scholarship to the Brigham Young University. Another senior in the spotlight is Jean Mariani, who was recently chosen as the vice president of the National Catholic Youth Or-ganization. Jean attended the con- - Silver Spurs Elect Officers On the evening 'of December 3. the Silver Spurs Riding Club of the Salt Lake Valley held their annual election of officers in the Judge's Chamber of the Murray Court House. Newly elected officers are as follows: president, Mrs. Evelyn Heaps; vice president, Mrs. Nada McHenry; secretary - treasurer, Mrs. Jeanelle Olsen; president of the Board of Directors, Mrs. Max-in- e Atkinson. Other members of the Board of Directors include Mrs. Dolly McKnight, Mrs. Delia Wharram, Mrs. Ruby Thomas and Mrs. Norma Williams, Contin-uing in their positions as drill-mistre- ss and assistant are Mrs. Doris Knudsen. Business manager for the club is Mrs, Joyce Burkin-shav- v. At the present tim the club has an active membership of 43 girls, and they are busy right now with their annual Sub-For- -' Santa program. Ute Rangers hold Children's Party Santa Claus will arrive in a sleigh drawn by a team of pranc-ing Shetland ponies for all the children and grandchildren of memoers of the local Ute Rang-ers Club on the evening of Thurs-day. Dec. 12 promptly at 7 o'clock. And there to assist the jolly old gent, will be three of his indust-rious little elves. When they arrive at the Salt . Lake City Hall at 2500 South State St., Santa and his elves will have 6tockings filled with candy, fruit and nuts for all the children, and he will take orders for Christmas morning from all of them. , Under the direction of Mrs. Bet- - , .ty Carlson, there -- will. be. a pro-gram by the children themselves, following which games will be U played, as well as cake, ice cream and hot chocolate eaten until lit-tle tummies, are full. Ute Rangers in charge of the annual event this year are Jimmy Jones, chairman and his assistant, A. Fred Dipo, both long members of the famous riding group. 'Teen Talkers' Bringing fame to South High this year is its A Cappella. Choir. Carrying on a tradition, they sang for the eleventh year at the First Baptist Church. They sang as their first song, "Krie Eleison" in Latin. The Choir will also pre-sent the Christmas Assembly at South on December 19. Last night was a big night for the sophomores when they held their Sophomore Class party. The students first met in the auditor-ium where an assembly was given based around a barnyard theme. After the assembly, they went to the gym for games and dancing. The party was under the leader-ship of class officers Dave Trip-to-e, Bonnie Hillstead, and Myrna Fillerup. Mr. Ron Nordquist was the sponsor. The Merit Scholarship test was given at South recently in order to encourage many intelligent stu-dents to attend college.
