Show S. L. Junior League To Present Show For Mentally Retarded Under the direction of Mrs. John D. Owens, the Salt Lake Jr. League Lea-gue is planning the presentation of a Christmas puppet show for the mentally retarded children at the Fairmount Park school, to be held in the Boys' and Girls' Club, 2361 South 9th East, on Friday, Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. They plan the presentation pre-sentation of "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Susie Snow-flake," Snow-flake," two productions for which they have been credited with much a claim. In addition to the puppet productions, produc-tions, the program will include the traditional visit of Santa Claus and the presentation of candy to the children, furnished by the Sweet Candy Co. The program is being presented by parents members of the Salt Lake County Association for Retarded Re-tarded Children and those parents who are working diligently for the success of the entertainment include in-clude Thomas F. Smith, Mrs. Le-land Le-land H. Dowsett and Mrs. Max Skolinck. They are being assisted by Mrs. Thomas G. Judd as a representative from the Jr. League. Lea-gue. Mr. R. T. Harris, pat presi dent of the Association and present pre-sent Board Member explained the aims and needs of the organization. organiza-tion. Its aim is the partial .rehabilitation .re-habilitation of those childfen, whose mental retardation is such that the are educable, meaning that they can be taught to care for themselves and to do routine jobs after training. In fact, as Mr. Harris Har-ris says, these children are often even better at these routine jobs than a normal child would be. But they need projects to keep them occupied and to furnish them with a small income. Mr. Harris sug-j gested such projects as folding boxes,, rolling newspapers for florists, flor-ists, assembling nuts and bolts and recovering valuable articles from floor sweeping from electrical shops and various repair shops, where valuable articles are lost on the floor, but where recovery , costs make it unadvisable for an , employer to expend the time and money, for recovery. At the present time, they have no fully paid instructor, and the classes are being conducted by two of the mothers of retarded child-Ten, child-Ten, who are at present taking instructions in-structions in Special Education to enable them to help these children. child-ren. The Salt Lake Junior League has just donated $1,000 to the school and; this is to be used for equipment equip-ment to better conditions. The League also sends four girls each day. to assist the teachers in handling' hand-ling' this enormous job. The Sugar House Lion's Club has been a staunch ally of the school since its inception in June of 1956, and the cots and blankets in the school's rest rooms were provided by this civic group. ' The aim of the school is not only the education of the children, but the instructing of the parents on how to live with their problem and the instruction and education of the general public about this problem which confronts us today. Statistics show that in the State of Utah alone, there are in excess of 5,000 mentally retarded children; child-ren; Mentally retarded NOT mentally men-tally ill. There is a tremendous difference. Mental retardation is not an illness, it is a condition and there is no cure for it. It can only be helped, by such groups as those who are behind the Salt Lake County Association for the Mentally Men-tally Retarded Children. |
