Cats Spot Bengals Three, Win By One After checking the ball in the back of the net, Steve Egbert comes away rejoicing after he scored the game-winning goal. Dave Wigham Clipper Sports SALT LAKE CITY Woods cross came roaring back to score four goals in the second half of Monday night's game to knock off Brighton 6-5 in the semifinals of the state 4A soccer tournament. The win leaves the Wildcats as the only undefeated team in the double elimination event. Although Alth-ough they are scheduled to play Davis on Wednesday, the Cats are assured a berth in the finals. The Wildcats started the game off on the right foot with Steve Egbert scoring the first goal of the match. Jon Sommer hammered a shot from the right side and the ball hit the post and bounced into the path of Steve who cooly put it into the net. Then the Brighton team got hot and started to beat the Wildcat defenders and soon the Salt Lakers had built up a 5-1 advantage. advan-tage. Egbert scored another goal, this on from the penalty spot, to pull the local side to within 5-2 at halftime. Credit must go to the Wildcat coaches and team for the adjustment adjust-ment they made at the half. Noticing No-ticing that their fullbacks were playing up field too much and were getting burned with the long ball, the Wildcats planned to stay back. The strategy worked. With the Bengal offense slowed up, the (Wildcat offense went on a scoring spree. To be more exact, Steve Egbert went on a spree as the senior winger poured in six goals on the day. He wasn't alone in his heroics her-oics though, as the entire team played inspired soccer. It was Steve who scored, but it was his teammates who set him up. Goalkeeper Tom Ross must also take a bow for this win as he came up with some alert saves to preserve the victory. Time after time Tom found himself in one-on-one situations with Brighton forwards, but in each case he cleared the ball savely. The fullbacks, Blake Steed, Shaun Colby, Keith Prows and Jeff Green also deserve a round of applause as they shored up the defence to play an impressive second half after a dismal start. Halfbacks Sergio Tapia, Glenn Bullock and Shawn Lavender got after it in the second half and were a big reason that the Cats were beating their opponents to the ball. Then the forward line of Egbert, Eg-bert, Kirk Dyches and Jon Sommer Som-mer looked dangerous everytime they touched the ball as they put continous pressure on the Brighton Bright-on goal area. Davis stayed alive, after dropping drop-ping a 5-1 game last week to Brighton, with a 3-2 victory over Olympus. This would have to be considered an upset since the Titans Ti-tans were ranked No. 2 in the tournament. To get to the Titans, the Darts tasted a bit of sweet revenge when they knocked of Bountiful 1-0 last week. If you will recall it was Bountiful who had beaten the Darts in the state finals the past two years. In other action: Woods Cross knocked off Highland 3-0 in goals from Steve Egbert and a couple by Jon Sommers last Friday. Tom Ross recorded the shut out in this win. The Cats also beat Taylors-ville Taylors-ville 5-1 on three goals by Egbert, who has been on a scoring binge lately, and one each by Sommers and Dyches. f 1 k |
