Show Onion Beats Elangely In First Grid game 12-0 On Home Field; Chart Two Games At Moab And Lehi A green gang of Cougars from' Union High School presented their new coach, Ted Heath, with a 12-0 win over the visiting Rangely High School in their inter-state meeting on Union's field last Friday Fri-day afternoon. There were sparks of outstanding football demonstrated demon-strated by individuals and as a team the Cougars piled up 13 first downs while holding the Green and White team to 7. The game, which was played under a blazing September sun, was a typical first-of-the-season contest, with both teams showing their lack of experience. The Cougars Cou-gars received the opening kick-off and made a couple of first downs before being forced to kick. Rangely Range-ly was unable to make their yardage yard-age and kicked to Union, and for a quarter nothing much happened. Early in the second period the Rangely quarterback made a misr cue as he tried a pass off to a fellow backfield man, and Jerald Broderick, Cougar guard, scooped up the ball and raced 40 yards for the first score of the game. Larry Ross, acting captain and end, threw a beautiful block on a would-be Rangely tackier to clear the path for Broderick's gallop over the goal line. The kick for the extra point was wide. Played Better Ball The Cougars showed quite a bit of class the second half as Clayton Huber found the range with his passes and Union piled up a lot of yardage from the air as well as on the ground. Some nice gains through the line advanced ad-vanced the ball to the 20 from f mid-field. At this point, Huber hit Ross with a pass that was good for 15 to the five yard line. From this point Jackie Bailey plowed over for the Cougar's second TD. Again the kick was wide. Coach Heath substituted rather freely throughout the game and gave most of his seniors and juniors jun-iors a chance to play in the contest. con-test. Ross, the only returning regular back from last year, showed show-ed a lot of promise, and Bailey, who played a reserve tackle position posi-tion last year, looked mighty good as a halfback. Others in the back-field back-field who look like they might have it were Huber, Jerry Murray, Callis Morrill', Lloyd Duncan, Kenneth Ken-neth Benson, Craig Ross and Roy Moulton. On the line, the work of the two guards, Jerald Broder-ick Broder-ick and Larry Jensen; tackles, Dwain Horrocks and Ken Bastian; ends Larry Ross and Heber Ras-mussen, Ras-mussen, and center Robert Lab-rum, Lab-rum, gave encouragement to Coach Heath and his assistant Glen All-red. All-red. Several other kids are coming com-ing along fast and will give plenty of competition to the older hands. Big Test Friday Friday, the Cougars will get their first big test in conference play as they make the long jaunt into the land of Moab for a night game at 8 o'clock, with the Uranium Uran-ium kids from Grand County High School. Little is known about the strength of the Moab, team, but this is certain win, lose or draw there is always a football game when any team plays the Red clad boys down on the sands of the Grand River; Coaches Heath and Allred will leave Friday at 8 a.m. by bus with approximately thirty kids, and will return Saturday.
