Show FARManaHOME.! fi HT4H STATE EXTENSION SERVICE SaiKHUVM - HOU ECONOMY By Louis A. Jensen County Agricultural Agent At this time of year house flies are usually numerous around our homes and yards unless un-less control measures are used. Everyone is aware that these pests carry diseases as well as being a nuisance, There is no good reason to tolerate, them now that effective control measures meas-ures have been developed. Fly control is secured by eliminating' breeding places, by use of insecticides,' and through excluding them from our homes by the use of screens etc. Keep all garbage cans tightly closed and see that they are emptied once a week. Manure should be stored in pits or compact piles unless it is spread often. Maggots Mag-gots may be controlled by sprinkling the manure piles with water containing 11 oz. of Borax in each 5 gallons. The addition of phosphate to manure will reduce re-duce fly breeding, Spraying gives excellent control. con-trol. Treat the entire farmstead, including barns, coops, fences, walls, etc. D.D.T. is effective and probably the most econgnv ical spray for this; however, it should not be used around dairy barns, so the best material is Methoxychlor. Fifty per cent wetable powder may be used at the rate of 25 pounds per 200 gallons of water. Lindane is also recommended for this use one gallon of 25 emulsion in' 80 gallons of water, or 10 lbs. ! of 25 wetable powder in 100 gallons of water, Livestock should also be sprayed with the same material. " The Duchesne County Fair is being1 held on August 24 and 25. The Fair Board and committee have already done a lot of work to make this event a success, but their efforts are in vain unless the people of the county sup-ort sup-ort them. " This means that if you have anything in livestock, crops or homemaking which is of good quality, it should be exhibited at the Fair. Lets not get the idea that this means only the people from Duchesne Du-chesne and vicinity. A County Fair should be county-wide. Giving support also includes your attendance. While it is, true that the small amount you pay as admission will help defray de-fray expenses, this is not the important thing. Exhibits and sports are useless unless there is a good crowd tQ. pbserye and participate. ! A new fair building is ynder construction end we hope it will be completed in time to use , this year. It will house all girls 4-H club work, women's depart-1 ment exhibits, field crops and fruit. Certainly this will improve im-prove the Fair to have all exhibits ex-hibits located in the same area. Premium books will be "out in the near future. Many people will receive their copy by mail and any one who does not, may obtain one at my office. I I The Utah State Fair is Sep-; tember 15 to 23. Any outstand-, ing exhibits at the County Vairj should also be entered in the1 State Fair'. In'4-H Club division, all worthy "exhibits will be en-1 terecj jn addition to cpiiny winners win-ners in livestock jydging, 4-H demonstrations ari4 Style Qress. Review- Premium lists and entry en-try blanks may be obtained at my office. Hot weather which cpmes with the tetter part of summer will result in decline pf pastures. pas-tures. It is well to clip them at I this time to control weeds and stimulate new growth. If your pasture is falling off, it would be wise to supplernent it with hay fe4 in the morfiing or evening. |
