GRANT L D S LEADER FOR 26 YEARS DIES AT AGE OF EIGHTY-EIGHT Public Services Planned For Beloved Church Leader In Tabernacle, Taber-nacle, Friday at 12:15 1 IN RESPECT TO GREAT LEADER Inasmuch as the funeral services of President Grant will be broadcast over K S L radio station, we feel that business houses of Roosevelt City in respect to this great leader, should be closed between 12 noon and 2 p. m. Friday, May 18. Signed George H. Harrison, Mayor Horace J. Ritchie, Bishop Heber J. Grant, 88, president of the L D S church for almost 27 years and Utah's foremost cit-zen, cit-zen, died at 6:35 p. m. Monday at his home, 201 8th ave, Salt Lake City. The president had been failing in health since February, 1940, shortly after he had dedicated a monument to the memory of the Mormon battalion at San Diego, California. In recent months his physical condition deteriorated de-teriorated steadily, although he had been to his office within the past two weeks. In the death of President Grant the church lost a distinguished distin-guished leader who served as president longer than any of his predecessors, except ' Brigham Young. The state lost its best known citizen and the entire western area lost a builder and developer whose influence will long survive him. Services Funeral services will be conducted con-ducted Friday at 12:15 p. m. in the tabernacle, which then will be thrown open to the public for the first time since Pearl Harbor. |
