Show News of Local Folks in U.S. Forces 1 IN PHILIPINES Word has been received that Pvt. Daune Bracken has arrived safely in the Phillipines. Duane enlisted in October and received his basic training at Camp Wol-ters, Wol-ters, Texas. He was home on a furlough in the early part of February. Before his induction he was employed at Pasco, Washington. RETURNS FROM OVERSEAS DUTY SANTA ANA, CALIF., April 1945 S-Sgt. Elmer Smith, 35, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith of Roosevelt, Utah, is currently assigned to the AAF Redistribution Redistribu-tion Station No. 4 at Santa Ana Army Air Base. S-Sgt. Smith, who has completed com-pleted 397 missions as gunner in : a B-24, entered the service Aug. 1942 and went overseas in Dec. 1943. He has been awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf , Clusters and 2 Battle Stars for ; his participation with the 5th Air Force in the major opera-i opera-i tions of the Pacific Theater. Freston, a B-17 Flying Fortress Gunner, is a member of tfV' the 91st Bombardment Group, V Pioneer Heavy Bomber Unit in 0', the European Theater of opera-dtfj, opera-dtfj, tions. This group commanded by Illy Colonel Henry W. Terry, Ossin- I ing, N. Y., is the combat home of the famous fortress "Memphis Belle", and was the first group to complete 100 daylight high altitude bombing missions from this theater. Sgt. Freston has flown in attacks on German communication lines and troop concentrations in advance of Allied Ground Forces, and industrial centers and oil refineries refin-eries deep in the heart of the Reich. He recently took part in the group's 330th aerial assault. He joined the Army Air Force in 1943 after graduating from Roosevelt High school. |
