Show ifrhl STATE EXTENSION 8ERVICK A.GIHCULTUES UOHBECOXOHICS BY LOUIS A. JENSEN County Agricultural Agent Corn silage growers in this area will be interested in the results of variety .tests which were conducted on the Winter-ton Winter-ton farm near Roosevelt in 1948. Eight varieties were planted in rows out in the field. They were watered and cultivated and otherwise handled the same as the rest of the field. The average yields were as follows: U. S., 52 23.23 tons per acre; Utahybrid 680 21.84 tons; Pioneer 300 21.36 tons; Ohio C-38 23.63 tons; Haapala No. 130 25.95 tons; Minhybrid 301 22.69 tons; Utahybrid 544 22.57 tons. It is difficult to draw conclusions conclu-sions as to the best varieties from a one year test. Also some of the differences shown in these yields are not significant. We can say, however, that U. S. 52, Ohio C-38, and Haapala No. 130 and Minhybrid 301 did well in this test and any of them should be good varieties to plant next year. Minhybrid 301 was the best yielding early variety over the state in 1948. My advice to corn growers would be: If you are obtaining high yields stick to the varieties you have been using if the seed is still available. Otherwise it will pay you to try one of these varieties which have done well I in the stateand local tests. |
